I'm a season ticket holder for the Portland Trailblazers; like any sport, the amount of noise depends on the fanbase. The Blazers fanbase can get loud, even for "routine" (i.e., not Lakers) games. I'm an alumni from 83, meaning I saw a LOT of games in the "heyday" of Carr, Livingston, X, etc. and it could be MUCH louder than AFH (I'm a KU alumni as well, from 88). It's ALL loud when the fans get into the game!

Didn't someone just a few years ago record Koch at between 120-122 db range?

The day before the Creighton game last year, I actually thought about going to buy a decibel device to see what kind of volume that game brought. Kinda wish I would have now.

I'll also note that it larger crowds = higher decibels, even if they aren't quite as packed (though obviously amplified if they are, like in AFH). The Chiefs set a record of 137.5 decibels in an open air stadium with a crowd that less packed than a typical college basketball arena, and to me the only reasonable explanation is that they simply had more people screaming (~76,000 to be precise, not counting those outside).

Wouldn't an 80K seat football stadium normally be louder than a 10K seat basketball arena?

I just downloaded a db level app on my iphone. I don't know exactly how accurate they are, but Im going to the Chiefs game this weekend and when I go to a couple Shocker games I will compare them =)

Normally the official recordings are taken at field level, as this shows the cumulative effect. Taking it from the stands is akin to yelling in someone's ear versus yelling down at the field.
You miss 100% of the shots you don't take....

.....but, statistically speaking, you miss 99% of the shots you do take.

Yeah I understand it wont be near official. Just for fun. What would be really fun is if we could get together $7500 for an official Guinness Book World Record attempt! That's about what it would cost to get that guy to come to Koch.

One reason Koch is so loud is the curvature of the roof -- sound bounces off the roof down to the center of the floor. Sound in rectangular buildings gets somewhat lost in the corners.

In an open air stadium, some of the sound is lost to the sky. It should take many more fans in an open air arena to generate field-level decibels than in a closed stadium.

Remember when Nancy Pelosi said about Obamacare:
"We have to pass it, to find out what's in it".

A physician called into a radio show and said:
"That's the definition of a stool sample."
