  • I was pretty happy with what I saw from team Canada. The Wiggins/Wessel matchup was pretty even on offense and defense. That is probably a really good thing. On that note, it was also nice to see the primary matchups of the scrimmage.
    Coleby/Lufile........Morris
    Early/Carter........probably would have included Green
    Wiggins/Wessel........Bush
    Cotton/Holland........Simon
    FreshVV/Baker

I think that shed some light on some looks we will see this year. I do wonder if Cotton played 2 just because Baker was playing pg... on the team that won, I might add :)

Anyway, back to team Canada. Lufile wasn't bad either. He had an odd looking hook shot fall, and he had a breakaway dunk. I think he may have done a discount double check after that dunk :)

    • I have never witnessed a dunk contest that included so many MADE dunks. They would try crazy stuff and connect. Then you have a 6' guy showing up your forwards.

Ria'n didn't just dunk. He tossed up a floater, caught it on the bounce and hit a reverse dunk.

I'm used to dunk competitions involving a lot of retrys and a lot of giggling. These guys are serious dunkers.

Tekele, Nick and Cle didn't even compete.

Coleby jumps so high that he just drops the ball in while he's still going up because waiting to come back down is just inefficient.

      • I realize some of this could have been Carter being too "slow" to keep up with Cle. But I thought Cle looked a little quicker and more aggressive heading to the basket than last year. Maybe a little better handles. If that is the case he will light the world on fire this year!

        Should be exciting!

note: I put the word slow in quotation marks cause no one on this team is truly slow. This team looks as quick and athletic as ever.

          - I noticed Cle is now the one setting a lot of screens, after Hall and orupke filling that role last year. That will be a nightmare for other teams to defend assuming the screens are good and Cle can avoid getting the cheap fouls on them.

-Holy cow are Carter's arms ridiculously long.

-Baker did pretty good at the point, but I think we need to bring Holland along at PG. Having Baker exhaust that much energy is not efficient, especially since he can be such a deadly shooting guard.
Your points are good but I will say that when Baker has the ball in his hands, everyone around him is better. If they can find another good spot 3 point shooter (maybe Wiggins, I don't know), Baker is great with the ball.

          • Attended with my son-in-law, who lives in KC and is a huge college basketball junkie. His remarks were:

"The Shockers look like all the great Big 10 teams of recent history with their physicality and athletic ability."

I reminded him we beat one of those great teams in the dance last year (Ohio State). He also thought we look better on paper than last year.

Cle could have a special year folks...Baker could have a special year folks...FVV could have a special year folks...Cotton could have a special year folks...there is a distinct theme going on here. I can't wait to throw the ball up for real.

            • ESPN used WSU as a segue to talk about KU, after they already spent 5-10 minutes talking about KU on "Katz Corner". It was an absolute joke. Syracuse's scrimmage got airtime. Oklahoma State's scrimmage got airtime. We got a single Rian Holland dunk. Did ESPN even stick around for the scrimmage? Heck, they showed more highlights from schools that weren't featured than what us and FGCU got.

              Screw ESPN.

They played one clip of Pitino in practice no less than four times. It was disgusting.

he gets rid of the ball really well.. snapping the pass.. you know, like the shortstop he was/is.

                • Off topic and maybe it's been discussed or should have its own thread....but....talking about the coverage on ESPNU last night....

Anyone think this new "hand check" rule will hinder us? Now I don't feel we are a hand checking team necessarily. But I am afraid this new rule will take out the aggressiveness we can play on defense. I guess it depends on what they call and the consistency they call it. But I fear it may take us out of what we do best....play physical.

If someone wants to move this to a new topic that is cool. I don't like cluttering the board with new topics that may not be interesting. I also don't want to derail this one either though. Just curious is all.

High school teams play there on Friday's. Looked like Kapaun and West.

                        • Cessna is Kapaun's "home" field.

Carter had two great dunks. One a between the legs windmill dunk, and the other a ball in each hand double dunk.

Not an advantage or disadvantage. If you have the better athletes you are always better off. E-Ville holds the **** out of us and hand checks like crazy. That's the only way they can keep up with our athletes. So it may be an advantage in the valley, however in the non-con there may be teams we need to "punch in the mouth" and a game called tightly could be a disadvantage. In the end i think it's a wash.
