Get a Roku instead. The one I have was $58 at Walmart. You can get the $100 if you wanna. I also own an Apple TV, but it doesn't do Amazon Prime or more importantly 3rd party "channels". So if you ever drop your Netflix you can't just switch to Amazon Instant Video. There's another thread on here discussing the Roku.

Roku is another good option. My brother, the Apple fan boy, has one.

I think the big difference is whether you have Apple products or not. IPad, etc. if you do, get the Apple TV. If not, get the Roku.

That's great for out-of-town, out-of-state viewers like yourself.

Unfortunately with Cox's attempt at a monopoly, the ESPN3 games that hold the Kansas22 telecasts are blocked from local viewers, like the entire states of Kansas and Missouri.

There are better options out there. Cox is using this play so they have WSU fans switch to them to watch games. WSU is getting $$$ from Cox so apparently it doesn't care one way or the other, as long as it gets its $$$.

I think it's pretty unfortunate and I'm sure there's a decent few out there who agree.

I'd guess their local area blackout would be either based on IP address geolocation or by the cable service you used to log in to the service with -- which would then block you from watching telecasts even if you were, say, in Oklahoma City trying to log in to ESPN3, because you pay for cable in Wichita. If it's the former, you could theoretically get around it with a proxy server, if you could find one fast enough to stream a game through (you'd probably have to pay for it). If it's the latter, you could theoretically get around it by using an out of town friend or relative's cable information for ESPN3. I don't know if it still works this way, but I logged into ESPN3 for the first time from my wife's family's house in Seattle, and for at least a year ESPN3 was going off of their cable service before it finally got around to asking for my own info.

Justin.tv might be another source. I've watched FSU games on there in the past. Theoretically, you could set up a stream from an out of town person onto Justin.tv that others could then view.

Not that I would recommend doing any of that, of course.

The proxy solution is harder than it seems. ESPN 3 "knows" when you use a proxy to access it and blocks content. There are a few tutorials out there that act like there are certain pay features that work well. The nice thing about it being location based, though, is that you can log in from anywhere. I was in a hotel using its Internet and I logged in with my wichita credentials and got the game.

Why is cox inferior to dish?

One thing is channel packages. There are a lot of channels that come with the more basic package on Dish or Direct that you do not get with Cox unless you pay more. One example is ESPNU.

The 2nd thing is that to me, the functionality of the DVR unit is not as user friendly as the others. I've had them all, and I'd rank Dish's DVR and softwar 1st, Direct 2nd and Cox 3rd. For example, with the new Cox system, there is no 30 second skip ahead function. This is a GREAT function for skipping through commercials or I used it a lot during sporting events to skip from play to play. Cox did away with it because they didn't want people skipping through commercials. You can still fast forward through them, which I guess they must think is better because you at least have to look at it whizzing by, but its not nearly as fast or convenient as the skip function. A lot of it is personal preference, I suppose.

Cox's tuner/DVR user interface looks like something designed by a HS computer class, circa 1995.

Another item - I can go directly to my provider's website (not Cox or Dish) and see plan and option pricing - clear as day. Cox's pricing is a labyrinth, because they want prospective and current customers to deal with their used car salesman equivalents at their call center, who might quote two completely different packages and pricing to two different callers. This part of the Cox MO makes you want to take a bath to wash the BS off of your person afterwords.

If you haven't checked out Contour from Cox, you should.

My brother has the 6-tuner DVR, another 2-tuner DVR, and 1 additional HD box. You can initiate a recording and watch from all 3 boxes. He has 3 TB of storage (about 1,000 hr of SD recording), the S&I tier, Variety tier, and bonus tier. He bundled with the Premier level internet (50 mb/s) and home phone for under $180/mo.

He also gets the Contour app, which allows him to watch a lot of shows on his iPad in his house live, or on-demand outside his house. It really is cool.

My issue with Dish and Direct was always having to sign a 2 year contract with only the first 12 months at the promotional rate.
