Too bad! I thought once we agree to play, they should be able to find an opponent, regardless of their level (i.e. if the team is good, then it's good; if the team is bad, at least they get WSU in the second round). Now, how do they do with 3 games? Playing round robin?

No tournament...just a tripleheader special event.

Bummer, but the coaching staff made nice lemonade with the Baylor scrimmage.

Sad that we couldn't find an opponent for the Dallas game. Would have been good exposure for the team. Good pick-up getting Bayor for the scrimmage.

The Dallas deal is not a tournament. Just a three game showcase.

I've brought this up before, but the closed door scrimmages really burn me. Baylor obviously sees the value of playing Wichita St., as have others including KSU. However, they won't agree to play when the lights are on. Gregg ought to press the issue that if these BCS programs want the door open to scimmage, then they need to be holding a date during the season. I know there's no leverage, but in a day-in-age when $$ is harder to come by, and there's zero $$ being made by the scrimmage, something has got to give. This doesn't even speak to the thousands of fans that would give anything to view the scrimmage.

I'm not sure the upside is worth it: meaning the value of stiff pre-season competition.

By trying to make them schedule us, we're only going to hurt ourselves. Instead of having a strong scrimmage/practice partner, we instead beat up on another DII school. Sure, the fans get to see a blowout that means nothing, but I'd bet that 3G and company get a lot more out of an organized scrimmage against quality competition than they would a beatdown against Emporia State. Plus, it gives the new guys more of an idea of what they'll be facing which prepares them a little better for March. If 3G decided to demand an actual game to continue these scrimmages, we'll be stuck scrimmaging UT-Pan America, and they may just return the favor and say not without a scheduled game.

Plus, as I understand it,they can scrimmage for a nearly unlimited number of hours, with instruction, whereas an exhibition game is only 40 minutes, with very limited instruction.

Good point. I believe in the past they've done two separate sessions. Going for something like 2 or 3 hours in the morning and then taking a lunch break or whatever and going another 2 or 3 or so hours in the afternoon.

I think there is little doubt that the closed scrimmages are much more valuable to 3G and staff in evaluating and developing the team than a 2nd exhibition game against an overmatched D-II school. As long as 3G can find a decent team to go up against I expect the closed scrimmages are here to stay.

Frankly, if 3G thought it might make a difference between being a Sweet 16 and a Final 4 team, I'd be happy to have both "exhibitions" be closed scrimmages.

I am not opposed to having one exhibition game because even though it is against a lesser opponent, there is something about playing in front of a crowd that takes getting used to, especially for the new guys. Yes, in this year's case, our first game will be against another non-D1 opponent, and in most years, it is still a team that we could sleep walk through. Still though, I'd rather get a game in that has a crowd before playing games that count.

I think that any coach will tell you that they get more benefit from playing a good opponent behind closed doors that a bad opponent in front of a crowd. Is there an adjustment to playing in front of a big crowd? Sure. Is it nearly as big a the hundreds of details about speed and athleticism of the game, positioning, sets, leverage, etc. that come with the D1 game? I don't think so.

What's to prevent the relationships than can grow out of scrimmaging a quality opponent, getting acquainted with the coaches, and developing some mutual respect for each other's program from leading to a game or even a home-and-home at some point?
