I'd also take the near or surpassing of 6 figures over around 12k a year in the d league or what ever peanuts they pay those guys.

Cal Bruton had long (13-year) and very successful pro career in Australia. That had to be pretty cool as well. Cal must have like it as he became a naturalized Australian citizen. His son Cal Jr. is also now playing successfully in the Australian NBL.

Okay, now, hold on. Carl is indeed a Brave Warrior, as all Shocker (and VCU?) fans know. And those are pretty impressive stats, including the assists.

But: (a) that lineup doesn't look the least bit Japanese -- seriously, in Japanese baseball, there's a severe limit on the number of Americans permitted per team (maybe in basketball such a limit wouldn't be possible). And (b) Judging from the history of Bradley and Marquette, isn't "Brave Warriors" politically incorrect squared? Funny how when you get out of America's marketplace for noisy victimhood such concerns seem to vanish.

Japan's pretty cool with racism in general, but I don't think they've ever done anything to Native Americans.

Call a team the Mighty Garlic Eaters, or the Okinawan Dogs, and you might have an issue. Similarly, those names probably wouldn't cause a problem here (or make any sense).

Funny how victimhood only exists in the country where the victims exist?

Congrats to CH. Wish I could have seen him play when I was in Japan a few months ago. Tokyo Dome's an awesome place to catch a baseball game, though.

And how could you pass up a chance to play for THE Kawai Ryuji?

An interesting set of observations from the guy with the Seminole on his avatar -- I guess some people and institutions recognize the difference between honoring a group and denigrating them. In any case, congratulations to Carl. May he score many points, grab many rebounds, earn many yen, and eat much garlic. (I thought garlicky food was more characteristically Korean than Japanese, though?)

Some institutions certainly do. And I'm happy to have graduated from an institution that has, since at least the 70s, gone out of its way to ensure that it honors the Seminole Tribe of Florida without degenerating into making a mockery of an ethnic group. FSU includes the leadership of the Seminole Tribe of Florida in all decisions regarding the name, image, clothing, and so on. Florida State continuously honors the tribe's history -- "Unconquered," a reference to the status of the Seminole Tribe of Florida as the only tribe to never be defeated by the US Government, is prominently tied to the university's representation of the Seminoles, as well as the use of Seminole lettering on their new football jerseys, specialized uniforms for Native American History month, authentic clothing chosen by the Tribe for representations of tribal members, and so on. As a university, it makes a concerted effort to teach Native American history courses. It continuously reaches out to the Seminole Tribe to bring as many of its members into the university's education process as possible through scholarships. And the Tribe has, continuously, turned down offers to share in merchandising revenue from the use of its imagery.

When other institutions make the same effort, I'll always defend their right to honor a group of people instead of making money off of lingering racism. FSU's difference between "honoring a group and denigrating them" goes a bit further than just going "Our cartoon Injun is done out of respect! Honest!" Had other schools like Bradley and Marquette made any actual attempt to earn the respect of Native American tribes and actually use their institutions to honor them in some way other than just a logo and a chant, they wouldn't have had to change their names.

"The real message we need to take away from this is that the Seminole Tribe's decision was exactly that — a decision made by the tribe itself. ... That is all that we have ever wanted. No one consulted us about the Cleveland Indians logo, the Redskins name."
In other words ... if you're going to honor someone, it helps if you talk to them. Preferably before they start claiming you're a racist making a mockery of their culture. Bothering to speak to the group you're "honoring" is a high bar, I'll grant you.

(And yes, garlic was a reference to Japan's historic racist mistreatment of Koreans. They have similar historic victimization of Okinawans/Ryukyuans and the Ainu.)

American Forward Carl Hall (203-F-89) had a very impressive game in the last round for Shinshu BW, receiving a Asia-basket.com BJ League Player of the Week award for round 10.
The 25-year old player had a double-double of 33 points and 16 rebounds, while his team beat Saitama Bron. (#12, 0-10) 91-81. Shinshu BW maintains the 7th position in Japanese BJ League. Shinshu BW is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 4-4 record. Hall turned to be Shinshu BW's top player in his first season with the team. Former Wichita State University star has very solid stats this year. Hall is in league's top in points (4th best: 19.5ppg), rebounds (2nd best: 12.4rpg) and averages impressive 3.1bpg and 71.6% FGP.
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

Goodness -- Carl is shooting 71.6% from the field?

That's a better "figure" than Jenn Sterger and her fellow Cowgirls used to have when they were chopping tomahawks.
