Originally posted by Jamar Howard 4 President View PostIf ever there was a player who could have a great college career but never make an NBA roster, it's Fred. There is no way whatsoever that he ends up playing in the NBA. Zero. Nada. None.
Sorry, he has the recruiting pedigree of a potential NBA draft pick. Size will be a major disadvantage there, and I think that'll keep him out of the NBA, but I would NEVER say zero. There are a number of 5'11" to 6'0" PGs on NBA rosters right now ... Chris Paul is 6'0", hell, Speedy Claxton had a decade in the NBA at 5'7". I certainly wouldn't say he's a lock for the NBA, but considering the progress I think he's capable of making in the next three years as a starter, I think it's definitely possible. I'd give him a 20% chance right now.
Now that depends a lot on his height ... if his 5'11" measurement is exaggerated, and he's actually 5'10", that drops closer to 5%. If he somehow is still growing and hits 6'0", I'd put it closer to 50%.Last edited by Rlh04d; May 1, 2013, 10:45 PM.Originally posted by BleacherReportFred VanVleet on Shockers' 3-Pt Shooting Confidence -- ' Honestly, I just tell these guys to let their nuts hang.'

Originally posted by Shockeriffic View PostI think your percentages are way too high. ESPN had him rated higher than everyone else. DraftExpress RSCI which combines all the recruiting rankings has him rated 131. That's still a potential NBA draft pick but most other players rated in that range don't get drafted. It's more of a 10% chance that players in that range are drafted. Most of those are big men projects that panned out. The only point guard drafted in that range, since 1998, is Nate Robinson. I agree that he has a greater than zero chance of playing in the NBA. I'd put it more at 5% though.
My percentages were more based on what I think he's going to look like after four years in the system of one of the best coaches in college ball. I've seen Leonard Hamilton at Florida State turn a number of borderline recruits into high NBA draft picks (although, granted, most of his draft picks have been bigs, and the smallest of which was a 6'2" PG in the first round) based primarily on the defensive skills he's taught them in addition to their own ability. If FVV keeps working on his athleticism and shooting, the defense will already be there, and being a pure point guard should help as well.
This is the stat line I want to see from him by his senior year to have a solid shot at the NBA: 13 ppg, 5-6 apg, 2 spg, 4 rpg, 40%+ from 3. I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility, although I certainly wouldn't bet on it. That's a better stat line than Armstead had this year, though, so he's going to need to work to get there. I don't know that that statline would definitely get him to the NBA even if he got to that point, but I think it'd be good enough to justify my 20-50% prediction depending on height.Last edited by Rlh04d; May 1, 2013, 11:42 PM.Originally posted by BleacherReportFred VanVleet on Shockers' 3-Pt Shooting Confidence -- ' Honestly, I just tell these guys to let their nuts hang.'

Still can't see Fred making the NBA. Too slow and not enough of a freak athlete to play at 5'10". Super excited about his remaining 3 years at WSU though.
