The best explanation I got was Mark on the radio, implying the game with KU. So what? When does the truth poorly represent our university? It just basketball for crying out loud.
Sorry about that.

The best way to find an article that would substantiate this would be to open up the shockernet archives around the time in question (they only go back to 2007 as it is). There was at least one thread devoted to the subject, and I am certain an outside link was posted.
But regardless, thunderkwb, you are fairly horrible when it comes to defending a story and probably should not pursue any future opportunities to do so. Just a simple perusal of the thread on phog.net shows that you got the facts entirely wrong. The rumored game was not supposed to be at AFH, it was to be in Kansas City, and we wound up playing Michigan State, not Michigan. When a story is half fact and half myth, at least get the easily verifiable facts correct.Last edited by rjl; April 16, 2013, 04:21 PM.The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

I don't like the feeling when someone I believe to be a lackluster online representation of my school basically becomes the de facto WSU guy amongst a group of people already predisposed to not care for us.

I had no proof, I emailed Mark and he replied, big deal.

So believe me when I say that this rumor has legs. People here did not just invent it a few years ago. I discussed it with KU fans at the time who had read the article too. The inability to find a 2005 article in 2013 is not the absence of fact, however, especially when you talk about trying to find an article about a very minor event that took place 7 or 8 years ago, and probably has been taken off of whatever website that hosted it long ago at that.
By the way, when you put your post in red, I imagine you furiously scribbling your response in crayon. The truth will set you free. But first, it will piss you off.

Nothing about this is pissing me off, and likewise, I have no reason to make any of this up. Nothing to gain whatsoever. In my experience, I would say that most of the morons you are tangling with on phog.net did not even go to KU. Once again, in my personal experience, the closer to the epicenter of KU you get (Lawrence), the less douchebag KU fans you encounter.

I completely get your point about the closer to KC the douchier they get towards Wichita, believe me I have, and many others on that board have called them out on that, but it is all good except for a couple of tools on their site.

I have no idea where this negativity is coming from toward thunderkwb. I thought he represented WSU just fine on Phog.
I remember the game was to be at AFH, not Kansas City. Who knows and who cares. It is a sidelight to the lame arguments why KU shouldn't play WSU.

Originally posted by martymoose View PostSorry buddy (@thunderkwb), but it's not the truth. Mark has been away from our program for a long time. I'm sure he still likes us, but he's a KU fan for life. He's not going to say or do anything at this point to make his university look bad. I'll give you the long version of my story. During the summer of 2006 a KU alum (don't remember his name) offered to host a BBQ for Turg and everyone connected to the Basketball program. This same guy hosts a BBQ for Self and his people every year. He did it for Turg because he's a KU guy. Anyway, a buddy of mine knew him and knew he wanted volunteers to help serve. So myself and a couple of other friends did it. When we first got to Turg's house he was in the basement with the team and they were watching the Tennessee game (on VHS). Turg complained that the quality of the VHS tape was poor...just so happened I had the DVDs I made of the two games so I gave them to him...he was happy and took us to his stash of WSU apparel and told us to take whatever we wanted. Fast forward to the end of the BBQ, everyone left and we had finished cleaning up, Turg dragged a cooler out of the garage and asked if we wanted to stick around for a few beers, said he couldn't have it out while the team was there. So of course we did. We were there a hour or two drinking. He told us a lot of stuff. At the time Tulsa refused to schedule us, he said had been working a 5 game deal with the former Tulsa coach, John Phillips, in favor of WSU because he knew he was about to be fired...to screw over the university before he left, but he got fired before they could finalize it. He also went into KU and said that a game was not going to happen in the near future and specifically said they turned down the game (MSU vs WSU) that was offered earlier that season. He talked about KU quite a bit...mostly disappointed in the fact Self wouldn't even discuss any possibility of a game. He was really looking forward to the tournament in Las Vegas and possibly facing KSU. The more beer he drank the more he shared, it was actually pretty fun. Told us about how every night after a game he can't sleep and has to take all kinds of sleep aides...but I wouldn't be surprised if most coaches have that problem.
Wichita State’s run to the Final Four hasn’t changed Self’s position on scheduling a nonconference series against the Shockers.“I’m not going to schedule based on what somebody else wants, and I’m certainly not going to schedule based on what’s best for another program and not best for ours,” Self said during a radio appearance on WHB-AM (810). “That’s not my job. My job is to do what’s best for my program and schedule accordingly.”
That shouldn’t detract from Wichita State’s run, Self said.
“One of the reasons why we haven’t played is out of respect, too,” he said. “We’d be playing a team that year in and year out has proven to be a really, really good team, and you’re playing a team with motive in a game that’s circled.”

I just shared with what I know, I have been in a long debate with those KU fans, and I gave them Marks response. The irony of all of this, the original thread on Phog.net was started because Self was on the radio and clearly stated that he did not what to play WSU. None of the fan's wanted to accept he did not want to play WSU because it was a difficult game for KU. So your off the record account is probably closer to the truth just based on Self's statement below.
