Any guesses as to what ??? is? Any guesses as to what conference is not "willing to play us?"
Actually, the pattern has to do with geography, not conference affiliation: two ancient Metroplex rivals from the old Southwest conference, neither with much basketball mojo except for the equally ancient Larry Brown to generate interest; then two games matching up schools fairly close to the DFW area, with significant local fan bases and connections, against intersectional opponents expected to have good teams this season.

With that in mind, WSU is already the outlier -- not a "home" team, despite being within driving distance of Dallas, but some more locally connected team's intersectional opponent coming off a Final Four, and likely the highest ranked team in the field. That would tend to exclude Creighton, whom I suggested elsewhere because it would be an esthetically pleasing matchup, because even though the Jayboys have a decent corps of traveling fans, they aren't exactly a name that comes to mind when you think of Dallas. (Plus, the Dallas police would probably lobby against them because they don't want the headache that comes with hundreds of drunken snobs from Omaha wandering around Deep Ellum and the West End.)

The obvious name is Arkansas, whose fans used to turn Dallas into Fayetteville West back when their league affiliation would bring them to town for a conference basketball tournament. I don't know what the pig hoop schedule looks like, but could they be running scared from the Shocks? Another possibility is Ricky's old school, which has a ton of Dallas area ex-students (to use the Texan term for alums), but as a former WSU coach found out after he tried to use A&M as a stepping stone beyond "this level," Aggies don't care about basketball. And I suppose there's always Texas Tech.

Just on name recognition, I'd be somewhat happy if WSU ended up playing aTm in Dallas, but delighted if they could play Arkansas.

        • Arkansas has not released their schedule yet so there is a chance that could be a possibility. After looking at schedules and teams within 6 or so hours of Dallas the only options are Texas A&M, Arkansas and LSU. Oklahoma State and Texas Tech have already announced their schedules and all of the other close BCS schools are already playing in the event. Keep your fingers crossed that one of those three schools still needs to fill their season opener.

            • Playing Davidson right before MVC play is a good thing. Solid competition right before the conference sure beats the hell out of playing a lower caliber team going into it. Nice to see the schedule like that. Am curious as to who our 2nd CBE game will be against.

              • LSU still needs another game. The fans want them to play in Dallas.

This is already one heck of a schedule and it sounds like its gonna get even better. This years schedule may be strong enough to account for the loss of CU in conference....if you win...

Ah, yes. That is the key that often seems to be taken for granted. A good schedule means little unless you cash in on enough opportunities.

I wondered that same thing recently, rr, and one couldn't blame them for being apprehensive at this point. But it's a good RPI game for them, it's not at CKA, and if they happened to win it would be a distinct resume enhancement -- and isn't that great? -- WSU is now a potential resume builder for others!

I'd be VERY pleased to see WSU facing off against LSU in Dallas. It won't be a big deal in Baton Rouge -- on their sporting calendars, the date that's circled is November 9, not 8th, and their attention will be focused on Tuscaloosa and this year's edition of that football rivalry. (That's what I'll be thinking about November 9, also.) But I'm not planning a trip to Tuscaloosa, so I'll be ready to devote my full attention to the Shocks on Friday, and LSU would make it easy for me to do.

Coach Jones has nothing but respect for Wichita State and Coach Marshall. They are two very similar coaches.

He has spoken of Wichita State each time I see him. Although I have not yet spoken to him directly about scheduling, I have spoken with several close to the program, and they like the idea a lot.
