  • Well, with all 6 ESPN contributors picking the Shocks to play in the title game and 5 picking us to win, it's time to put up or shut up. With last year's "surprise" F4 run, this year is when WSU can prove they have arrived.

Anything less than a regular season championship and Valley tournament championship will be considered a fail with no sCUm in the picture, so winning those gets us little accolades. Therefore, the OOC is where we need to shine and show doubters we are not one year wonders.

I don't like having to play DePaul again in the first game and don't like our time slot. That said, I'll save my real b*tching and moaning about this after the Shocks win the CBE. The target is squarely on our backs, just where we wanted it to be. The new challenge is keeping it there!!

I would much rather say screw this tournament and get us a neutral game like @shocker3: mentioned but I wonder how this type of scheduling works. I think I read in an article that we want to "maintain a good relationship with the Sprint Center." Would boycotting this tournament hurt our chances in getting a neutral non-tournament game worked out?

Pretty sure you can watch any of the ESPN channels on ESPN3, in addition to the internet-only games. Although the ESPN3 / WatchESPN difference always confuses me.

Boycotting it now? I would think that would hurt our chances of ever being in another tournament. Ever.

          • Texas is on ESPNU and we're on ESPN3 for one reason, and one reason only.

Texas is affiliated with a major conference and we''re affiliated with a non-major conference.

            • Let's be clear folks, the problem is not primarily that the tournament screwed us over in the scheduling. The problem is that 2 of the 4 teams guaranteed to be in KC are probably not going to be very good (DePaul and Texas). I'm not convinced we would be much better off if we had gotten Texas instead of DePaul. Other than the difference between ESPNU and ESPN3 (and there is not a massive difference betweent the two since people don't casually watch ESPNU anywhere like ESPN or ESPN2), we didn't get a raw deal from the tournament.

Do I wish the field was stronger? Sure. But so long as both WSU and BYU take care of business in the semis, we will get a good rpi game on national tv in the finals, so I can live with that.

                • We have to remember, we committed to this back in August of 2012 so it would be kind of hard to exactly know how good a team would be a year and a couple months away. It also wasn't until November when the four teams were finalized. I doubt the CBE knew they would have had a Final Four team as the headliner for their tournament in the name of Wichita State.

I don't see how only playing in other tournaments instead of KC hurts our chances of being in other tournaments.

What he is saying is that boycotting this tournament would make other tournaments wary of adding us. We currently have a reputation of traveling well, which makes us a good add for tournaments. If our fan base gets a reputation of refusing to show up to tournaments over perceived slights tournaments might not see us as such an attractive addition to their field.

                      • From Paul:
Alabama and WSU are looking at moving their game to Dec. 17 (one day earlier than planned) so ESPN can broadcast it on one of its networks.

What I'm saying is next time KC gives us an invite, say "thanks, but no thanks." I hope we're at a point now where we can pick and choose what tournaments we play in. I just don't know if that would cause any backlash in trying to get a non-CBE game in KC.

                          • This is an ESPN thing and has very little to do with the tournament. As someone stated earlier, we were the #1 seed and DePaul the #4.

                            • Jeff ******* is picking Texas over WSU. Why does this feel like sour grapes?
