If we're to get this kind of treatment, we can spend our tournament time in Maui, Atlantis, Puerto Rico, Disney, Cancun, Vegas, LA and actually get on TV. We have options, and good tournaments, that could get us TV and exposure without having to be treated like this in our own backyard. I may have missed a tournament or two as well.

It's a fun time slot as well. I look forward to getting home at 2:30 in the morning. In a 4-team tournament like this, the top team (by a lot) and the team that will draw the most fans (by a lot) should be able to pick whoever the heck they want to play.

I'm just glad we've got a schedule put together where something like this doesn't tank the chances of playing some good teams for the year.

        • DePaul should be better this year than last, but that doesn't mean they're good. I'm ok with having to play them first but the no TV thing is what's really insulting.

          • Editor's note: Over two days, we're releasing the brackets/matchups for 11 of the top early-season events. A thread of previews and info for all 11 tourneys can be found here.
If you're not going to go all the way, why go?

            • Is it possible that ESPN3 actually has more eyeballs than ESPNU. I watch the SHOX on my sons xbox whenever they are on ESPN3, ESPNU is still very much a fringe "station.

Many more people are watching on the internet, and I believe the game is "blacked out" from the internet if it is on ESPNU

              • I'm not happy about this but let's play devil's advocate for a minute - maybe the CBE organizers requested this to get more WSU fans to actually come to the game. Also, BYU and Texas are in bigger TV markets.

                  • Come to think of it, I no longer have the U and 3 works better for me personally, but I can always find somewhere to watch. There's little chance I have the ability to head up to KC for a Monday/Tuesday schedule anyway.

                    • Texas basketball fans are like KU football fans. They only watch when it's something meaningful and they are winning.

                      • Is anyone really surprised we're playing DePaul? If you setup a tournament you're gonna match up the best team against the worst team in the first round. Hence WSU against DePaul.

I think we would be better off scheduling a Saturday afternoon game with Creighton in Kansas City. I would think both schools would bring lots of fans for that game.

At least with the CBE if we win against DePaul, we will be playing on the deuce the next night.

                          • The network assignment might have more to do with DePaul than it does with us.

                            • Actually, Texas at least has some history of success on the court. KU football would kill for a coach whose resume compares to what Barnes has put together during his years in Austin. Of course, whatever they killed would probably never be missed, because no one would be watching to notice.

Seriously, for those who hope WSU starts recruiting players who are good enough to be auditioning for the pros, Texas is an object lesson: Barnes's program started going downhill once he started having too many guys leave early. Kevin Durant gave him a great season, and was by all accounts a great teammate and quality person as well, but his one-year wonders since then haven't exactly been Durant-caliber players.

That's what happens when you simply recruit talent and not character. 3G would love to have NBA talent even if it's only here for a year or two, but he would only recruit those who fit into the profile of the guys he wants here.
