  • Also for the record: We tried to give ISU this game so we were still within our right to take it back.

    • I watched the whole game and I didn't think we played as badly as some of our fans thought. Sure it wasn't one of our best games, but I have to give the Redbirds some credit. Sure they stunk their first 6 Valley games, but they are a darn good team right now. It took a ton of grit to pull that game out.

      • Really gritty game that showed what kind of me we see wearing the Yellow and Black. Battled in a tough environment and got the improbable win. One of the best comebacks I've seen, gotta love the resolve they had. Those last few minutes they played like the champs they did in the early part of the conference season. They can build on this game alot. I can't wait to see the next game! Go Shox!

        • Great view of the action, or should I say the foot-action! Too bad for Jackie Carmichael that Hi Karate aftershave is no longer sold. He'd be looking good for some endorsement money.

          • Does anyone know anything about this report from Kansas.com:

            Temper, temper

Several witnesses said coaches from both teams exchanged words in the hallway outside the locker rooms after the game, sending security guards scurrying.

WSU coach Gregg Marshall declined to comment on the specifics. He did discuss the matter with Illinois State athletic director Gary Friedman. A security guard followed him and his players while they walked around the arena until they exited.

“I’m not going to talk about that,” Marshall said. “That was crazy. It was uncalled for, I’ll just put it that way.”

The rivalry between the two teams heated up in last season’s Missouri Valley Conference Tournament, when the Redbirds eliminated the Shockers in a physical game. This summer, assistant coach Dana Ford left WSU, after one season as a full-time coach, to join the Illinois State staff, adding another element of tension to the series.

Here is my take on what may have transpired. I'm not sure Carmichael raised his leg with the intention of kicking Tekele, but once he saw Tekele and he just happened to be in position to nail him, he made a snap airborne decision to take his shot. Thank goodness for brain cramps. My spin on why the official didn't call it is because it was so far out of the ordinary, in fact, very likely something he had never seen in a basketball game, that he simply could not process it properly.

If anyone ever deserved this one it was the Shockers. Think back to the mugging of Garret Stutz in St. Louis and, of course, the very nice MMA-style front kick by Carmichael tonight. Think of all the injuries this team has had to deal with and overcome this year. Yes indeed, the Shockers deserved this one.

Just getting back to Chicago hotel and reading through this thread. I was fortunate enough to have seats behind the bench. That is the first time I've had seats that close and it is a different way to watch the game (or not watch if the coach or refs are in the way.)

I was surprised how much more contact that goes on that I don't catch on TV or when I am in the cheap seats.

Carmichaels's Hong Kong Fuey kick happened 20-30 feet in front of me and at that time I saw it, it was pretty obvious it was intentionall. When the foul wasn't called, I just figured that he simply got away with it.

I wasn't going to comment on the post-game stuff, but since Suelly already wrote about it, it is fair game. I just heard that assistant coache(s) from Ill State started yelling at WSU coaches in the hallway that leads to both locker rooms. I heard the yelling, but had no idea what was going on.

The coaches and players that I saw after the game were excited about the victory and were calm, cool and collected.

Redbird Arena is a nice, on-campus facility. It reminds me of the Kansas Coliseum, and the Topeka ExpoCenre. There were some very, very lame heckers behind the Shocker bench. I hope our hecklers have some originality and humor. I'm not sure how many times I heard, "Hey Marshall, do you need a neutral court?" Also on the drive back from Chicago I listened to the Ill State post-game call-in show. Those fans had the exact same complaints about "MVC" refs that we do. I probably listend to 20 callers and they all had the same thing to say.

Maybe, maybe not. I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked ILS Coach Muller may have blown-off the post-game handshake with the Shocker players as well.

Word is that if the Shocks and Redbirds play in St. Louis the court will be enclosed in chain-link fence.

                      • Finally finished the game a little over an hour ago. I gave up on Front Row and waited for it to be available on ESPN3. And then read through this thread.

First, there really shouldn't be too much complaining about the difference in fouls. There were some head scratchers, but lets face it, they were much more aggressive on offense than we were and attacked the pain while we settled for jump shots. That there explains the difference.

Paul had a sub par game. I don't think he's a horrible official, but he had a pretty poor night. There's no doubt he saw the kick as he was looking right at it. The only thing I can think of is it was so out of the ordinary and unexpected that it caught him off guard and he basically froze. I also believe it should have been a flagrant 2. The replay showed he was looking right at Cotton when it happened. I think the officials were afraid to make that call with less than a minute remaining against ISUs best player.

Cleanthony Freaking Early. When he's not in foul trouble he's damn good.

                          • Quite frankly, I'm afraid if these two teams meet in Arch Madness. There are going to be some hot tempers. These two teams are starting to hate each other, as well as us fan bases. And I don't even have to mention the Dana Ford situation.

If Creighton does leave this league in the next few years, Ill State could be a great candidate for the next team to hate on.

Whether it is Jackie or ISU fans, anyone who claims that what he did on that play was natural or necessary for jumping for a rebound and landing is so delusional that there is no way to even have an argument with them.

I hate Illinois State. They were on my last nerve in St. Louis last year but after tonight it's obvious their players, fans, commentators and coaches are incredibly blind and delusional with no concept of reality. They have leapt to #1 on my Valley hate list.

I haven't seen anything from Muller yet so maybe he just walked into Jank's cupboard of punks and he will turn it around after a few years.
