Shockers at Redbirds Game Thread

It should have been a flagrant 2, the refs were just trying to let ISU off the hook.

Exactly, and now the ISU fans are using that fact that the refs did them a favor by making it a flagrant 1 as the basis for their complaint about it being a bad call, which is what is so ridiculous. It could have easily been a flagrant 2 with no foul on Armstead given what Carmichael did, yet ISU fans believe they were the wronged party in all of this.

A few things I can't get over:

* What you accept in victory, you must also accept in defeat. Here's hoping our guys can improve on what was a garbage start.

* Illinois State went 30-33 from the line. At home. And lost.




* Perhaps the most grim point in the game was at the 13:30 mark - IlSt just went on a 6-0 run to extend the lead to 11. HCGM took a timeout to regroup. From that point forward, the Shox outscored the Redbirds 41-29 to pull it out. Here's the stat-lines from that point forward for the Shox:

If I understood Mike Kennedy correctly before the game, the redbirds are now 11-2 when shooting more throws than their opponent. What is amazing about our beloved Shocks, is they find ways to win, even when we have games we can't hit the broad side of the barn for a spell. However, tonight we scored lots of points in the 2nd half and made our throws and shots at crunch time. We are at our best when in the flurry mode and tonight, we saved the very best for last. WOW!!!!!!!

Also, their fans are claiming that we "need the refs' help" to win this game. This is a game where:

The winning team had 19% of its points from the free throw line.
and
The losing team had 45% of its points from the free throw line.

Apparently, 1 call in our favor constitutes the refs giving us the game, but a 9 foul and 13 free throw attempt disparity in their favor means nothing. I have no problem complaining about officials, but if you look at that stat line and claim that the team that got called for far more fouls and attempted far fewer free throws had the game given to them by the officials, you are delusional.

The best argument that Illinois State fans apparently can come up with is a rule that only flagrant 2 calls can be reviewed later if there was not initial foul called, which, if true, just goes to prove what Marshall said about them being lucky that the flagrant 2 and subsequent ejection weren't given.

I generally have had respect for the Illinois State fanbase, but their series of post arguing that "sure our player intentionally kicked an opponent, but we believe he should have been allowed to get away with it" has lowered my estimation of that fanbase in my eyes. The only reasonable reaction to that play as a fan is to be angry at Charmichael for doing something so incredibly stupid and unecessary.

EDIT: Now one of their fans has posted the gif that is on this thread, and the only thing he can take away from it is that the official was right there to look at it, so the fact that he didn't call it must have meant that there wasn't much there. How stupid can you be to see that gif and think that it is a reasonable basketball play (and that goes for both the ref and ISU poster)?

I lost respect for ISU including their fans at STL last year. They play like a bunch of thugs. I never understood the love affair some posters have for ISU fans.

I think a little credit needs to go to Carl and Tekele who kept their emotions in check after "The Kick". Carl was right in the middle of the play and I've seen less happen among BCS teams where a pushing match (or worse) starts. Carl just tried to get the call from the ref while defending JC who had the ball and Tekele just got up and hustled down the court.

Excellent. A call that went in our favor ONLY because the OBVIOUS and correct call would have been to call the foul in the first place. There would have been no foul sending Hill to the line (which took the lead to 7)...it would have been 5, and 2 FTs would have cut it to 3. Same difference. Stupid play by a very good player.

Oh and he dump trucked Hall at the end as well.

I'm positive Coach Jans regrets the shout in the tunnel, regardless of what was being said, or thrown, at him.

I had ring side seats for that wrasslin' match also. Agree 1000%

Also, major props to Malcom, like or dislike some of his plays, he was clutch with the 3's just like a couple other victories this year. Every player on this team has a role to play.

Was able to catch the end of the game on ESPN3. What a finish. Did anyone else catch the very tail end of the broadcast? As in, did anyone else see the Shox celebrating in the tunnel? Thought I saw a player of our toss the "suck it" sign a good amount of times. I personally thought it was funny, hopefully he doesn't get in trouble.

I want to give a shout out to Shaka Smart. When VCU was trying to come back against us, he had the officials stop the game and go to the monitor to check for a possible flagrant foul (which was not given). May have planted a seed in Marshall's mind that you can stop the game even after the foul has occurred. Not saying that Marshall didn't know that. Just saying that the good coaches file experiences like that away for later.

I mentioned that at the bar here in Austin tonight.

After the game when HCGM was talking to MK he specifically mentioned that he didn't realize you could throw a challenge flag like that and if you are wrong it only costs you a time out. He took advantage of it not too many games later and there was no Flagrant 1 and he lost a time out he never cared about anyways.

But then he did it again at the CU game. That was a pivotal moment.

For some reason I think there was another time between the CU game and tonight that he used that rule. Maybe it was a time he wanted to and the ref wouldn't listen.

But I was screaming at the TV tonight that they needed to review it and that HCGM needed to 'throw the red flag, so to speak'. So needless to say I was really glad when he did. And I even said "Thank you Shaka Smart" and drank my beer.
