  • On the coach's show, Gregg said he made it clear to Mal that such things would be bench time.

This is just the tip of the iceberg with Fred. As I have said in many other post, FVV is a stone cold winner! He has won at every level, and that will not stop here. He still has much to learn about the college game, but he is very smart and a quick study. I like him coming off the bench at this point, there is no pressure and he gets a different view of the game. Fred will be the best point guard in shocker history when it is all said and done. Prepare to go dancing for many years to come...

Screw that -- we're past the halfway mark on the season and he's turned the corner already. He doesn't need to be studying from the bench at this point. The view of the game he needs right now is the one with the game ball in his hand.

P.S. have him send me an autograph -- I want a rookie card. :)

          Yeah,
I really want FVV watching MA and DW for a "different view"...IMHO he has paid his dues. He could learn some defensive stuff, but in General, I like him in a Billy Joel, "Just the Way You Are" manner.

Now that was pretty darn Valentine's Dayish!

            • Malcolm was very complimentary of FVV in the Eagle article this morning. Malcolm and Fred both have a lot of good human qualities and both are team players.

Thanks for the post. The defenses he faced are probably a factor in this. I would imagine the 3-point defense of SIU, MSU, and DU are significantly worse than what he faced in games 19-23. Games 13-18 also represent the start of Valley play when we faced several of the bottom feeders (as well as the tough Southern Miss).

He actually faced MSU (and Bradley) in games 19-23 and was 1-4 against UNI (game #23). I think the type of defense he played against in some of those games was a factor, but more from a lack of the team (including Mal) being able to successfully break down the zone and Mal throwing up not so good of shots.

What was most noticable was that in games 19-22 he put up 29 3 pt shots and made only .207 of them. That's 7.25 three point shots per game. In all other games, he shot only 3.3 three pointers per game and made .452 of them.

I could hardly believe that Malcolm put up 29 attempts of 3 balls in 4 games, so I checked your arithmetic. You are so correcto. I apologize for doubting your figgers.

First 17 games, Cle was 90/182 for 49.5% and 22/62 for 35.5 from three.
                            Last 9 games, 37/89 for 41.6% and 9/36 for 25.0% from three.

                              • I think you could do this for just about anyone and they would look like a streaky shooter.

For example, Ethan Wragge's 3-pt percentages are streaky:

                                Games 1-6 = 58.3%
                                7-12 = 20.6%
                                13-18 = 54.5%
                                19-23 = 42.4%
                                24-26 = 12.5%

Keep that in mind when breaking down percentages over a short period of time. Wragge is one of the more dangerous shooters in the conference but even he can look terrible over a six game span. Other than the three game stretch where Malcolm was forcing his shot I don't know if this really reveals much. Although I was originally going to use McDermott as the example here but he's some sort of machine that shoots around 50% from three even in tiny sample sizes.
