I know as a HS ref I have to be very aware of which conference I'm officiating in as those who run it want games called a certain way. Some may want more contact to be allowed or to be slow on whistles during certain plays. Others want it tighter. Maybe one conference focuses more on post play while another wants things called differently on the perimeter. If you have a problem with how games are called in the MVC, and I have at times as well, that goes to those in charge in STL. They're the ones who give the directives on how things are handled and why you may see things called or not called that you see in the XII or the B1G or wherever.
If your statement regarding different conferences "emphasize" certain officiating styles is true, that seems less than logical. How can officials have a fighting chance at being perceived as unbiased when they have to be conscious of different rules within the rules? For example, according to the NCAA rules manuscript points of emphasis for the past couple of years are things like cleaning up charge/block/player control fouls, excessive swinging of the elbows, sportsmanship, taunting, etc...if an official is trying to focus on those points of emphasis in addition to a special officiating style dictated by a conference, no wonder a large portion of them look like monkeys @$?! Footballs out there.

Call the game by the rules agreed upon by the official rules of the organization or association. There shouldn't be independent conference interpretations. CALL THE GAME BY THE SET RULES!!!

    • The thing is, even within the rules, there's a lot of gray. And that's where the conferences may differ in how they want things handled. Not all contact is a foul, obviously. So how much or what kind of contact constitutes a foul is then left to judgement. That's where different conferences may emphasize differing opinions.

Just think about HS, the City League isn't officiated in the same was as the SCBL. It's much more physical and that's because the CL wants to allow them to play through more physicallity and the SCBL doesn't. It's not a stretch to say the XII wants to allow more contact out front than the MVC does. (I'm just making up stuff). It has nothing to do with changing or not following the rules, it's just defining where in the gray area they want things called in their league/conference.

A truly dumbass statement. I (as well as EO) will expect your apology after the BJ game.

I respect that. The problem is "gray" is being interpreted differently by different sets of eyes, not only from officials, but from conference big wigs. Officials have inherent challenges to begin with in terms of "in the moment" interpreting the action their eyes are seeing and connecting it to a relatively complicated rule book. To expect them to "in the moment" make accurate judgements based on all the criteria rattling around in their brain is iffy at best. KISS!!!

And that's fair. And I'll admit, it's sometimes difficult, especially early in a game, to find your "groove" when jumping between conferences that vary a great deal. Going from the CL to the SCBL or the other way, is a big jump in how they desire the game to be called and it can effect you early. I'm sure the same could be said at the college level as we know some leagues allow more physical play underneath than others, and a number of the MVC refs work in those higher profile leagues as well. It could be something to keep in mind with some calls, especially early.

            • I've watched this game several times. My problem with the ref's is not so much what was called on WSU but what wasn't called on BU. There were several ticky-tac fouls on WSU ie. Lufile on a rebound - Armstead and Wiggins on light bumps. BU was bumping our guys and several got man-handled at times with no call.

It wasn't every call but the whistle was not consistent. I thought our guys did a great job of keeping their composure. We've had teams in the recent past who would have melted down.

The bogus charge call on Early landed him on the bench for quite some time. One has to wonder how much of a difference having Early in the game for those 7 - 8 minutes could have made. It was a horrible call and while it did not change the outcome it did change the game.

              • Perhaps the refs are told to be harder on the away team than the home team? It is in the league's best interest for their teams to do better at home than on the road. I know the NBA uses all sorts of tactics (mandatory inconvenient flights for visitors etc.) to give the home team all the advantages they can get.

                • The officiating has been a hot subject at WSU for quite a while. When Randy Smithson was coach, it was always a big topic. His teams, while not the best, played a much more physical style of basketball. The MVC didn't like it. You could tell the refs were not going to let them get away with anything. I believe that this is when the problem started and hasn't stopped. We are still thought of, in the Valley office, the same as when the younger smithson was here. It's a joke.

If they were to let WSU play like the other conferences allow their teams to play, the MVC would hate the total domination by WSU year in and year out. They are trying to keep WSU closer to the other teams even though everyone knows that they are much more physical and athletic than everyone with possibly the exception of Creighton.

                  • I just hate it when an offensive player initiates contact and gets bailed out.

...And this little gem provided it!

Because some (maybe even a lot) on SN really do believe this and in the interest of public safety, here are some other things to keep watch for:

                                1) Black Helicopters
                                2) Man eating Cicadas
                                3) Bigfoot (No, not the one doing Jack Links beef jerky commercials).
                                4) Nellie, the Loch Ness Swim Team Captain
                                5) Area 52 shenanigans
                                6) Nancy Pelosi

                                Ahhh... that's enough for now.

                                That is all.
Above all, make the right call.
