  • This wouldn't be good

When word filtered out two summers ago that Missouri State's Kyle Weems was on pace to earn his degree early and would be eligible to transfer without sitting out a year, it didn't take long for other programs to start … Continue reading →

NCAA allowing transfers with a 2.6 or higher GPA to transfer without sitting out

I'm not sure this is a bad thing. I think the one year rule for transfers is a bad thing to begin with. Does a coach who bolts from his team have to sit out a year before coaching his new team?

I think this would just open up pandora's box when it came to tampering. I know they use the argument that regular students can do it. These are not regular students to the university. It's just something to help out the big boys.

The reason it is bad is that it promotes big schools using smaller schools basically as farm clubs. Let a small school take a risk on a guy, develop him, and as soon as he plays well the larger school can snatch him up with no penalty.

If a kid doesn't want to be at WSU and thinks he can go "big time" somewhere else, I don't want him on the team anyway

If the NCAA really is all about being "fair", it should never pass.

I think the key thing is the school from where the player is transferring has to give permission for the player to play immediately and not sit out. Obviously, you are not going to do that if you believe tampering has occurred. I would think this permission would be withheld along the lines used restrict a player when they asked to be released from a scholarship.

                  Why not?

Possible that WSU might lose players from that rule. Also possible that we might gain players. They mention using the lower conferences as a farm system for the big conferences, and that's possible ... but it's also possible bench players from the big conferences will move down in search of playing time. Maybe a guy riding Duke's bench will now make a jump to Indiana State to be a starter. Big conference teams rarely utilize the junior college circuit as it is, which IS a farm system for division 1 ball, so I'm not sure they'd be utilizing this rule as a major way to make up their roster.

I think 2.6 might be a bit low, but it sounds like a fair rule. I don't like that coaches can lie to athletes to recruit them, then bounce to another school with no penalty, while the player is penalized if he then tries to leave the school that no longer has the coach who he agreed to play for.

Dunno if it's good or bad for WSU, but this is a bad idea.

Big difference in taking a Juco who'll generally take half a season to get up to speed and a D-I ready Junior or Senior proven player.

Ummm, no. If the player doesn't think it's worth sitting out a year to "go big time", he may be perfectly happy staying where he's at.

If this rule were put into place then just about every kid at a school that isn't "big time" who performs better than expected before he's a senior is going to at least test the transfer waters and many of them will bolt if they get a bite.

This is the rule that would take back much of the parity that college basketball has built up.

I really think we are overblowing the impact of this. Are you telling me that the kids that are here right now playing basketball at WSU are ONLY here because they didn't get any looks from "big time" programs? In my opinion, WSU is a big time program and we need to give these kids credit for recognizing it. I think we as fans also need to recognize it and stop being so paranoid.

As long as the current coach has to approve it, I think it's a great rule change. Many players that leave a team because it didn't turn out to be a good fit often end going to lower division school to keep playing. The new rule will allow them to seek another D-1 with the coaches blessing.
