We look fine on offense against the Howards and Directional Colorados of the world, but when we face a top-50 team (which BTW, Tennessee may not be) we suddenly struggle to score and lose our ability to defend without fouling. We foul on almost half of our possessions in good teams, and that is a recipe for losing close games. It seems like we sometimes get into a rut of TOs and jacked up 3s on offense followed by quick fouls on defense, and that is not good.

And let's be honest, Tennessee didn't particularly play well but we played badly at all phases of the game. If we want to be a top-25 team that expects to go the NCAA tournament and contend for an MVC title, we need to play better.
    "We need to play better."

    He is right.

WSU did not play well at all last night (with one exception) and although the officiating at times was questionable (Luckie & Hess are F4 guys; LJ, well, hope he goes to camp this summer), WSU did not deserve to win.

The problem basically could be traced to poor PG play.
MA & DW had bad games and really made for a big hole to try and overcome.

It also doesn't help when two of your SR's spout off and get whacked with T's.

MA's T was really stupid (yapping at their bench?) and CH knows better than to yell right in the face of an opposing player.

That is a POE and he knows better.

Those two instances hurt the cause and were just plain dumb.

I'm sure they will learn from it and it's now time to move on.

    That is all.
Above all, make the right call.

      • The two most disappointing aspects of the game to me:

        1. Marshall took the night off. We played what, 2 possessions of zone D? First possession they had a wide open three and it barely hit front iron, the other....we fouled. The overplay on man d was getting us killed.... No adjustments were made. Tennessee was well documented as struggling to shoot the ball... The substitution strategy was a bit weird to me...Lufile has a much better chance of hanging in a physical game that Jake.... And to top it all off, there really didn't seem to be a constant emphasis to give the ball to the only guy who had the ability to score. But by golly he was setting screens at the top like a mad man! Just very disappointed in Marshall not earning his pay tonight. I'm sure he will make up for it, but for one night, he was not very good.

        2. Armstead. Probably cost us the game.... Whats sad is he played like he normally does, he just didn't get away with what he normally does against lesser competition. Yes he hit ONE big shot at VCU...since that shot he has been jacking up stupid 3s like he's playing church league. He is not a good shooter, therefore he should not be jacking up 3s with guys in his face. A PG is supposed to get the team set up and distribute the ball, maybe drive to the basket once in a while or shoot the OPEN 3. Just not impressed with him on the offensive end.

I know I am going to get blasted for questioning Marshall, but that is my opinion of this one game. And if you feel the need to bash, please expand and state which points you disagree with.

I will not listen to any discussion on Armstead, he is what he is, and that is not a great BBIQ PG.

          • Warren Nolan has us at 21, a drop of 3 spots. Tennesse was in the 120s/130s and is now 66. It wont hurst very much long term, unless it comes down to a tight bubble where that win would have been a big decider.

I don't disagree that MA and CH should have kept their piehole shut.....but it did seem like there was a double standard with the UT bench. Plenty of "chriping" going on over there

                • I don't see how anyone can defend the refs from last night? That was just a horrible game for them,Terribly one-sided. I realize they did not cost us the game because they weren't the ones missing shots or throwing lobs to people that shouldn't be getting lobs. But they definitely had an effect on the outcome of the game. The blocking foul on Baker when he was sitting there eating a sandwich he had made waiting for the guy was just retarded. I have a question for the referee apologist on here, how can we get a T for screaming and for calling out the d when running back down the floor and their guy goes to the line to shoot the ft for the fantom taunting T misses the ft and yells **** so loud you can hear it on tv and nothing... Crickets from the refs!! Please explain the allowance of cusing over a primal scream? Bullshit

                  • Holy cow guys, the sky isn't falling. It was a tough loss and it stings a little, but we'll get over it and move on and win a helluva lot of games this year. Look on the bright side--at least we didn't lose to Boise State by 20 points AT HOME. Have some perspective.

                    • Demetric and Armstead need to start playing like seniors. I'm not dumping on them too bad since they are 9-1, but leadership is severely lacking. Is it me, or has DW hit his ceiling? Seems like he hasn't improved much over the years. And CH needs to stop yelling all the time.

I think we need to lean on CH and CE, with some role players doing the little things to help out.

                      • One thing I really hate to see in this thread, is any negative comments at all regarding the coaching staff...

Quite frankly, I don't care if HCGM sat in the locker room the whole game last night and didn't coach one bit. I think he has done enough to earn our respect and trust. I may comment negatively about players, I may comment on refs, I may comment on other teams or the overall effort of ours. But one thing I will not comment negatively about ever, period, is HCGM. He has earned the right to coach and recruit the way he see's fit. Tonight was not even a blip or minor slow spot in his impressive career, If HCGM decides to come out and play 5 guard lineup against creighton I will scratch my head and feel comforted in the fact that he is a much better coach than I...

Armstead was running his mouth at the Tennessee bench before turning around and playing innocent and calling out plays. Hall screamed right in the guys face. It may not have been his intent, but it's what happened. Complaining about either of those is pretty ridiculous.

As far as cursing, it's the college game and it goes on. If it's not at an opposing player and loud enough to be an issue or at the ref, but to ones self, it's not going to get called. Even in HS it depends on how loud it is. Often times refs will tell a kid to watch it when he gets frustrated with himself.

The game wasn't the best called game but I don't think it was as one sided as some want to believe and it sure as hell didn't cost us the game. Poor decision making from just about everyone not named Carl Hall did that.

I missed the blocking call on Baker so I can't comment to that one, but I really didn't have any issues with the other block/charges either way. There were a lot of fouls both ways called that had zero effect on either team and didn't need to be called. Perhaps fewer fouls leads to less foul trouble and a different game, but that goes both ways as they were in foul trouble most of the night as well.

                            • Sub-- there is no way those T's should have been called no way! I didn't see MA spouting off so if he did it must have been pretty quick and the one on Hall was down right stupid and should no have been made. Every game that happens when a guy makes a tough basket and screams, you see it all the time. But I suppose you can't see that with blinders on like the guys had last night!

They really didn't have that much foul trouble. One guy fouled out and he should have fouled out probably twice! We drive the lane get bodied no call they drive the lane whistle galore? Not one-sided really? I know you are a great Shicker fan and I am not doubting that, but to stick up for those jerk offs last night is a little rediculous to me. Even Jay Bilias thought the game got out of their hands! @JayBilas: The officiating in the Tenn-Wichita St. game has gone way past embarrassing. Unfortunate the "amateurs" are being let down by the "pros."

                              • Every game someone screams right in another guys face? No. It wasn't the scream that got the T. It was that he was screaming right in the opponents face.
