North Texas (15-4) at Wichita State (11-9) Game Discussion: Jan 29 (Wed)

I thought the boys played hard and relatively smart for most of the game. I really would have liked to see them rewarded instead of pissing down their legs the last few minutes.

One thing I’m learning in sports is that there is really only one way to discipline players: playing time. Don’t want to be Randy Smithson sitting your best players for petty bullshit or mind games, but fail to execute the basics and you come out. Our bench is incredibly short so the guys on the floor know no matter how bad they **** up, they are playing. I understand that as the coach you want your best players on the floor all the time but this is short-termism. 1. You don’t have real consequences for nonperformance and 2. You don’t develop your bench players to a point that they CAN be counted on in an injury or foul situation.

Mills is definitely out of his depth. This and next year are going to be very bad I’m afraid to say.

I don't really share the same feelings regarding Bell in this game that others here do, but Hill should have definitely gotten a personal "time out" for a few minutes towards the end. That dude was just driving into absolute traffic with no clear plan or chucking up 3s when others were more open, wasting valuable possessions. I said earlier that I can pinpoint our loss of momentum on him calling his own number.

Bell was doing some questionable things, too, but those were things that were working for him earlier in the game. Hill was trying to get "hot" at a point in the game where he should have just had the self-realization it was not his night and distribute to others who were in a better position to do the scoring.

The last 30 seconds of the game was a total coaching embarrassement. Down 2 possessions and UNT had the ball yet no fouls? Nothing to stop the clock? I swear Mills was trying to lose that game. Just awful.

This combined with the DRASTIC difference between the UNT play out of timeout and ours ....

There was actually more that I expected to be honest. I was going to guess 4-5k. I was thinking it would have been closer to 2-3k

I was glad that Bell hit a big 3, but when he blew a kiss to the crowd I just wanted to puke. Dude appears to be all about him and padding his stats and not about the teams success. I know we have to have him score for us to have a chance to win, but I wish he would realize that every team knows he won’t pull up to shoot a mid-range jump shot or pass the ball to a teammate. Again probably a good kid, good student but the selfish stuff is very annoying. FHCGGG would have had him sit next to him every time he went one on four in the lane.

It's pretty obvious our defensive struggles has been an effort thing. When they give effort they are pretty good

Yeah....I don't know. We are fundamentally poor, defensively. We are also talent deficient. We have some players with good strengths in areas. But you ARE correct about the effort, the effort was there last night, even if the execution lacked a lot. That kind of effort, much like the Memphis game, works against most of the AAC (with our talent).

There are just some things that are mind-blowingly awful in our execution, especially on defense, that makes us miserable to watch at times.

Literally any kind of offensive thought process in the last 10 minutes is enough to get the dub last night.

And why we didn't foul (I get they are good FT shooters, but still) in the last minute is criminal.

I have, and will continue to, defended the play and especially the effort of XB this season. He's not perfect, but he's mostly busted his tail and he's been the one guy that we can rely on almost every night, but I am right with you on the antics. No feel.

Really surprised he didn't get a Technical for it.
Will Howard and his crew must not have seen it cuz the NCAA has been all over officials to penalize any player who 'performs' after making a three point shot or other "plays".
Quite simply, XB was lucky and has been told numerous times not to do that type of sheet.
But Bell is Bell so he does it anyway.

I like to consider myself able to adapt to the ways of the younger crowd(Yes, I am old) but this business of KISSING TO THE CROWD, OR WORSE, sticking a needle in your veins for ice water when making a shot irritates me no end ....I sadly had a moment where I MIGHT have chided a 4th grader on my grandsons team for giving himself the ice water thing after missing ELEVEN SHOTS IN A ROW........felt a lyttle bad about that....:)
