  • Does anybody remember how "stupid" Marshall looked for never calling time-outs? But when the team was clicking on all cylinders, not calling time-outs was the absolute dagger in many situations. Marshall was all about constant pressure. Coaches would exclaim how difficult it was to play us. "You think they are tough, but then they come out in the 2nd half and are even tougher". But when we weren't playing well, he looked like an asshat for not calling them.

Mills gets brand new players every year, there is an adjustment period. I wonder if the average non-brand name schools that have been beating us this year (with "guaranteed" less NIL), have more experience on their roster? And by experience, I mean playing together for 2 or 3 years? Maybe not, but it would be interesting to know.

I'm guessing many coaches around the country are trying to implement a system with players who aren't gonna get a freshman year to "figure things out". I recall Marshall's system having a fairly steep learning curve. There's a good chance he would not be doing well right now.

If I'm the coach, I'm definitely doing a deep dive on teams that are playing well with little experience and watch what they are doing. You eliminate the ones with all-star rosters. Does anybody follow college bball close enough to name a team without all-star players, that had massive turnover last year, that is doing well this year? Can you comparison/contrast their style of ball compared to ours? Are they H.O.R.S.E. city? Do they have a Tekele Cotton? Ivy League (everybody's smart)?

Might be interesting to compare our 1990s attendance with that of the Brown/Mills era.
Apparently some large donors stepped up in FY24 (ended 06/30/24). Had they not done so the program would have been insolvent as of the end of that year Liabilities would have exceed assets by roughly $3 million without the increased donations all other things being equal, although there probably would have had to be some cuts somewhere. So I thought that provided some hope. If that level of giving from the large donors continues the program can survive, although it really doesn't address the additional $7 million per year we need beginning next year per ADKS. The big issue ADKS has is the trajectory of the men's basketball program is providing a very imposing obstacle to making progress. While ADKS certainly inherited a very challenging situation he also made a large contribution to the current situation with the perhaps premature firing of IB and what so far appears to be a swing and a miss in the hiring of Paul Mills.

I am not as confident as ShockRef is that a return to the MVC is out of the question at some point in the future. However, it is not necessarily inevitable that is in our future. Anything and everything is on the table until the program can return to fiscal stability and sanity. And who knows if or when that will happen. Uncertainty currently rules the roost from my perspective.

You're wet behind the ears. Throughout history we've had more swings than misses.

        • One difference between now and the Cohen.Thompson era - Cohen and Thompson were coaching in a stronger conference.
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.
We like to cut down nets and get sized for championship rings.

FIFY. A little late to be of much value at this point.

I'm referring to more recent history (2010-2020).

To me the 90s is not ancient history. Believe me a lot of diehards feel that way.
