  • Another thing about Fvv. He played very tentatively last night. He lacks a little confidence right now and doesn't attack as much as he will when he is more experienced. While he isn't extremely quick, he is very smart and will know how to attack the way that 3G wants him to. With Marshall's comments about FVV and Baker having 4 years together (it shows what he thinks about him), I would be very surprised if as the year moves on, FVV's minutes don't consistently approach 10 minutes per game.

    • I think cotton can play anywhere he darn well pleases. He is a tank and apparently can posterize people too.

I think that Marshall gets to choose where he plays. Right now he has chosen the 3 position for Cotton.

        • Late to the party I know, but I liked the what I saw from the Shox. The margin of victory wasn't outstanding but the game was never in doubt. Looking forward to VCU. We play with intensity, we win that one.

          • Geez. From looking at this thread, you would think that the Shocks almost lost and that half of our guys are terrible and shouldn't be playing in the Valley. However, none of that's true.

C'mon people. Don't go from sipping the kool-aid after an exhibition to overreacting to a sloppy first regular season game (which, by the way, should be expected). Your feelings right now certainly shouldn't be elation, but you shouldn't be dreading the rest of this season, either.

It isn't that we think our guys are bad; most of us probably believe we have more talent than VCU. But VCU has every reason to be more prepared at this point of the season, and we are playing on their court. We can wish for a victory, but it isn't smart to expect it.

              • I'd like to see DWill as the primary backup at point. Fred has time to learn but we need experience there right now.

Against VCU that might be a good plan. We need experienced ball handlers out there to counter their pressure. I don't think FVV is that far away from being #2 behind Malcolm on a consistent basis. We need to hold our TO's at 14 or under to have a chance, so whatever lineups 3G throws out there needs to have dependable handles.

                  • Fred might have the best handles on our team already. He might be a bit tentative due to the speed, but that's the EXACT reason he needs playing time in this game. Nothing is on the line if we lose so what better time to get him Top-25 in the country speed experience?

True that we can overcome a loss to VCU relatively easy. But this is a game we could really use a a win. We need some non con victories for our at large chances. A win goes a really long way. I dont think GM will think for one second that getting experience has any value if it lessens a chance for a W.

                      • Keep in my mind that 3G had no game film on UNCC and really wasn't sure what to expect from them. The switching defenses early in the game no doubt caught them a little off guard.

Also I think it is significant that we had 8 turnovers in the 1st 10 minutes against UNCC and only 4 over the final 30 minutes despite a lot of experimentation with lineups and playing our "second" line players substantial minutes. One of those turnovers was Malcolm trying to dribble through the press and getting tripped up and another was CJ making his bid (and failing) for some time at the point. The learning/adjustment curve within this game was quite good.

3G knows pretty much exactly what VCU will try to do to us defensively going into the game. Now whether or not we can deal with what we know is coming is another question that will be answered Tuesday.

I think ShockerNet expectations might have been too high for the UNCC game but I also sense they might be too low for VCU. No doubt VCU will be big challenge. But the Shocks have some talent themselves and can present some issues for opponents to deal with. I'm looking for a very interesting and competitive game Tuesday.

                        Go Shocks!

I like this in theory; however, last year DWill played 14 minutes with no points, no assists and 2 turnovers. I remember him dribbling into the trap on consecutive possessions as well. He kinda wet down his leg under pressure. If that is not the case this year, then by all means, let DWill be the primary back-up at PG. FVV can learn later. I would not be surprised if DWill, Marshall and VCU remember that performance last year and his minutes are limited as a result.

We should have a strong rebound advantage and we will not have an athleticism issue to overcome at any position, but this is a bad time of year to face this style of team.

Isn't that where Mrs. Marshall sits? If so, was she more animated than usual?

Totally agree. I was thinking if the game got out of hand toward the end.

Negative. The lovely, animated and passionate Mrs. 3G resides in Section 122.
