Any news is good news? Not really. Check out this abstract:

FADED GLORY WSU BASKETBALL A PROGRAM IN NEED OF MENDING

You don't even need the rest of the story -- it's all right there. BAHAHAHAHA

John Smith not only had the hype from the national media, he had the hype of following X out of Columbia, SC. John Smith, hands down.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

This will be unpopular since he's still here, sort of, but for honorable mention I submit: Johnny Coy.

For basketball? Interesting. I get the feeling he wasn't too stoked when Gene basically 180'd his position on letting JC play two sports.

Yes, for basketball. And I thought it was Marshall who ultimately found the situation unworkable and let Johnny go. After all, wasn't his scholarship counting toward basketball?

              HA! "Mrs Ewell", nice!

My point is anyone that comes here as a walk-on (though I think he did end up getting a scholarship due to we had NO players), gets a pass on any "Most Hyped" or "Bad Players" list, in my opinion. Or else, you might as well list ALL of the walk-ons we had in the 90s.

It's kind of like listing the student managers for Cohen on a thread about "Worst Coach Ever".

You could be right, I thought I remembered Gene threatening to pull the plug if JC didn't participate in fall baseball activities after his redshirt year (after saying otherwise during recruitment), and Marshall being unwilling to share time in the fall.

How really good was Johnny? Did he project as a pretty early starter?

Cohen was bad, but I think if John Cooper hadnt been injured things just possibly could have been different.

It was so bad back then that we once showed up for shocker madness and coach Thompson approached one guy in our group that stood about 6'5" and asked if he played ball. He was desperate to put together enough walk-ons to field a full practice team.

To be fair, based on the thread question, EO would still be considered overhyped if he averaged 28 ppg, 14 boards a game, and finished as National POY. And that's simply based on the thread generated about him. Anybody with a thread that large is bound not to meet expectations. I think it's safe to say at this point, at the very least, it's not out of the question to say he's been overhyped.

EO hasn't even been a one game wonder, let alone a one season wonder in which you are predicting he will be. For a guy with 150 plus pages devoted to him, he sits atop of Mount Paramount of all-time busts.

I forget the year, but weren't there open tryouts for the team? I think 3 spots were students that tried out.

Probably 1993-94. I think that was the off-season that the Wiggins incident went down and John Smith went full-Klitschko on his girlfriend. We also had a recruit or two fail to make grades and didn't find out until about August.
