Seems to me that if you win the opening tip you will have 1 more possession in that game than you would have if you lost the tip. I suppose what you do with that possession is the more important thing. But in the big picture whether are not you win the opening tip will rarely, if ever,be a key to the game.

Now winning the tip at the beginning of overtime is probably much more significant although not necessarily determinitive of the outcome. But tha one extra possession in OT is clearly more significant than the one extra possession at the begining of the game.

Talk about splitting hairs boys...in a college basketball game having one more possession is so insignificant compared to football. In basketball having one less possession than your opponent is like having one extra turnover. Not a big deal with the volume of possessions there is in a game. Too many intangibles from the opening tip til the final buzzer to justify getting crazy over one more, or less possession.

When you get the ball back to start the second half, it is insignificant and does not garner an "extra" possession.

Regardless of any of that, just remember at the beginning of the game @C0|dB|00ded: is standing for EOffense.

Sorry guys. This makes no sense. You start the best players who'll probably play 5-10 minutes of basketball, not with the strategy to win the opening tip.

How many times do you see the player win the opening tip and the other team come up with it? How many times do you see the referee toss the ball poorly not allowing the player who jumps higher have a chance? How many times do you see a jump ball where neither player times it right? Who says that Carl Hall can't win the tip sometimes?

Sometimes one logics oneself right out of being logical.:)

Winning the opening tip at home can be very important in gaining control of MO. Our fans are on their feet clapping and chanting. Getting the tip and then scoring quickly sets the tone for the game. Now a team like SIU-C back in their heyday probably preferred to lose the tip so they could start their circus act.

We score first, we gain confidence. They score first, they gain confidence and we sit down and stop clapping. It's better for us to score first thus we need the tip.

On paper the opening tip seems unimportant, but as I've pointed out, there are other intangibles gained.

Of course you don't start a player just to win the tip. I only mentioned it because it's a bonus with EO on the floor.

I would love to see the Shox rack up another 20 plus win season and make the NCAA's, I'm also impressed with the level of recruiting GM has done. However, at the mid-major level, we have yet to achieve the level of say Gonzaga who reloads every year and makes the NCAA's consistently and repeatedly. Instead of every 4 years of having a chance to make the NCAA's, where we have to wait for our frosh and sophs to become good players during their Senior season, we can expect to wait every 2 to 3 years now as long as GM continues to be here and bring in the type of talent he has. This would be an obvious improvement and very welcomed. Thoughts?

Seems to me the main point was making the tourney consistently. Let's hope the bracketologists and selection committee prove KC wrong... I'm sure KC would happily stand corrected then..
