Seems to me that if you win the opening tip you will have 1 more possession in that game than you would have if you lost the tip. I suppose what you do with that possession is the more important thing. But in the big picture whether are not you win the opening tip will rarely, if ever,be a key to the game.
Now winning the tip at the beginning of overtime is probably much more significant although not necessarily determinitive of the outcome. But tha one extra possession in OT is clearly more significant than the one extra possession at the begining of the game.
