      Cold,

You have a Darwin approach about everything, but the MVC. The Shockers are judged on the basis of their wins and losses. If we win everything else will be just fine.

We wouldn't share in the ncaa revenue based on appearances and wins in the tournament. Don't know what it amounts to but we got money when we sucked and siu didn't suck. So if we were to go to the tournament every year as an independent and managed to win a game or two each year then we would be much better off since we wouldn't have to split it with anyone.

Had another brain fart...would the big boys squeeze us and not schedule us (they don't now) and would the others of comparable rpi not schedule for fear of losing. How tough would it be to fill a home and home schedule amounting to 25 games every year?

Not to mention the cost of buying that many home games.

Who would you play while everyone else is playing conference games?

9 x Cal State Bakersfield away games and then
9 x Cal State Bakersfield home games.

At least we'll know what team to focus scouting on.

                Oh and post-season we'll have a mini two-team tourney. Best of 5?

Generally most teams will play a few OOC games during their conference schedule. You have 300 or so teams to build a schedule from (preferably the top 150 teams). It would have to be something like a bracket buster game where you have them at home the first year, and get them on the road the second. It would obviously increase the stress of making a schedule because you don't have the automatic conference games, but there would be the positives, like eliminating the sorry ass MVC teams that only hurt your RPI.

It's a crazy idea with the obvious benefits of being able to build your own brand through autonomy and also not having to share in tournament revenue. Of course we are not Notre Dame and do not have out own massive TV contract so we would lose out on whatever the MVC shares from television. Nobody is telling the networks to avoid us, but we would have to work all our own individual deals out.

This is a wacky idea for sure, but I like exploring ideas that are outside the box when it feels like we are trapped in a box of our own with the MVC.

I want out of the MVC as much as anybody. Either that or kick some teams out and replace them with better ones. But Indy isn't the answer. Scheduling would be a nightmare. We'd play more road games because we'd have to make up for what the nonrevenue sports would lose. We wouldn't have to buy that many more games than we already do, we'd just have to be more willing to do H/H games with others. And I'm not sure we'd be able to schedule anyone in the MVC if we left them. Why would they want to help us out?

We only have two options when it comes to getting out and neither is a given. One, fight like hell to get into the A10 with CU. Two, bring back football in hopes of eventually getting into CUSA or the MWC.

The greatest thing about going independent is our independence. We could actually call the MVC tomorrow and tell them to piss off. While it may not be the most prudent decision, it is fully in our control. Very few things involving the NCAA (BCS) is within our control. If our basketball program stayed as competitive as it is right now, which I would compare to a mid-level BCS team in regards to talent and athleticism, we could really redefine our reputation to the nation.

It would be tough at first, but I wonder if we would eventually be accepted as a "safe" team to schedule by the BCS schools. No more would a loss to us mean a loss to an "MVC team". It would just mean a loss to Wichita State, which by all intents and purposes, is a program that fields a roster of players that are BCS. I know it's fantasy land stuff, but the "potential" upside excites me. Or should I say excites me a helluva lot more than watching the usual dregs drag there asses through our hallowed arena every year.

I think I discovered a solution for our other programs. Again, keep in mind this is fantasy land stuff... we could have baseball join CUSA, and leave the rest of our lower programs in the Valley. So basically only our basketball team would be independent. Since I am just making stuff up here, there is always the possibility of WSU baseball going independent as well considering they have no problem scheduling BCS teams all over the country. They could make a schedule every year that only includes warm weather teams.

Of course all of this silly discussion could be negated if we had a serviceable football team. But since we don't I am getting craz... ERRR creative.

Last year WSU's share of MVC and NCAA revenue was $500k.

                        For comparison, KSU's was $18M

First of all, I love out of the box thinking.

I just don't see how this works though. It will be all but impossible to schedule games during conference season. The only time schools schedule noncon games during conference season is for TV events (e.g., bracketbuster) and even then, coaches complain about the distraction. Since TV networks make all of their deals with conferences, it will be near impossible to get a TV game during conference season, thereby making it hard to get teams to round out a schedule. While it may be possible to find one game or even two, it is hard to believe an independent could find 16 such games each and every year, even if you were willing to schedule all roadies (which would be economic suicide anyway). Even schools that are able to maintain independence for football (Notre Dame, BYU) don't even try to do it for basketball. Creighton stepped out from the MVC for several years, but eventually the NCAA tourney forced them back into a conference.

I think it would be difficult to even get home and home series too. Mids that know that their noncon SOS is pivotal to getting an at large are going to be reluctant to take a chance on a team without a conference. Despite the fact that there would be no conference affiliation, I suspect members of the big six conferences (and their fansbases) will still not treat an independent as an equal. To those types, you are either in a BCS conference or your aren't. While I like the creativity, they will stay say that the independent does not face the same conference grind that they face, so I wouldn't expect many home and homes there either.

Finally, I'm pretty certain the MVC has a rule requiring members to field a men's basketball program in the conference. I don't see that rule being waived to house a school's olympic sports.

(As an aside, if you wanted to take your baseball program independent, I don't think the mVC can do much about it. I know Creighton considered doing just such a thing with soccer a few years ago...)

You would hate to lose Evansville because of their long storied history in the MVC, but would help WSU pack to leave the MVC? Just curious, why?
