Mills is going to need to keep the team playing with the same intensity throughout the end of the year. That includes the conference tournament if he doesn't want to bring much toastiness onto his arse. The second year is about the time you see most coaches (who will make it) show steady improvement.
If he can't keep the boys playing hard, then there's a big problem.
After effort, it just comes down to recruiting AND recruiting budget. And by recruiting budget, I mean specifically, ransom money.
I am still on record as preferring that WSU protests the state of things while turning our entire athletic department into a club/intramural league. But... since we are likely going to soldier on, I will occasionally watch the games with expectations ONLY of effort.
P.S. We literally didn't even have a functioning NIL program 12 months ago. Maybe we had $500k for this year? That is not going to support a nationally competitive team. So we adjust expectations until enough gullible/spineless folks step up and pay the ransom.
Can you imagine what a FVV would command today as a freshman? $250-350k minimum. And if he had good marketing, maybe more. What do you think Fred and Ron would be worth as Sophomores? As Juniors?
If we want to be top 40 competitive each year, we're gonna need $1.5M for the entire team. You can take that to the bank. Or not. I don't really care.
