There are actually 3 ways for HCPM to get a one year contract extension each year:- 25+ regular season wins
- Regular Season Conference Champion (including tie)
- Conference Tournament Champion
He only has to hit one of those 3 to get the extension and based on the wording, even if he hit more than one milestone, he only gets one year added to his contract (in other words, he can't get 3 years added by hitting all 3). I think the incentives are good because if he hit any of the three WSU should be in the NCAA tournament, although there's always the chance the 25+ wins may not be good enough depending on the quality of the wins.
But it's nice to see there's some additional incentive to win the conference tournament even if the first two aren't met.Not responsible for damage from posts that sail over the reader's head.

but otherwise you aren't really making the point you think you are.
Lets summarize:
A coach that led a team a to:
1st Place in the regular season
Coach of the year
an AT LARGE bid
NET of 70
2-4 Q1 record
2-1 Q2 record
1 loss outside Q1/Q2
Best Win over #5 Houston
You are saying that its stupid to consider an extension for that. (which I agree with giving him a FIVE YEAR 1million plus annually for that was dumb)
But then you say it ISN'T stupid to give this coach an extension:
12th Place Finish
Auto Bid (like 13-14 seed)
Net of 155
0-4 Q1
4-5 Q2 (maybe 2 ish more wins if we win the tourney)
NINE losses outside Q1/Q2
Best Win #57 SMU (net ranking BEFORE losing to Temple today), maybe over #32 FAU if they don't bow out before we would play them.
So you are saying THAT coach deserves an extension? That ranks up there with one of the dumbest arguments I've seen on this board. You must be in that category that is so blinded by hate for FHCIB that you are happy with the results we are seeing apparently? (to be clear FHCIB shouldn't have gotten that contract and I'm not making the case that he should have. Just have no idea why you thought that was a good comparison)

Theoretical scenario for those that think an extension would be warranted.
Lets say every single year going forward our regular season results matched this year. We finish well under .500, don't beat anyone that's tourney level, and finish in the bottom 4 of the league. Every single year. BUT every 2 out of 3 years, we manage to win the conference tournament. So we are going to the tourney every 2 out of 3 years .. likely as a low seed .. and likely get blasted in round one.
Would you be happy in this scenario? Because the way the contract is structured it would take a REALLY long time for Mill's contract to run out (Like 15 years).
I sure wouldn't ... but that's what this type of clause enables. 25 wins, and regular season champs makes more sense to me.

Sure its a way to get an auto bid, but I've never considered the conference tournament champion the "real" conference champion. Don't see a hot weekend meaning more than 2+ months of other games. Putting so much weight on that in the contract feels very "low major" to me. Getting hot for a weekend while not being relevant the other 3 months of the year isn't the goal of the WSU program. We want to be battling for at-large bids. We want to be in the conversation all year .. not just for a week. Not responsible for damage from posts that sail over the reader's head.

... No really, deuces.

So using my scenario his initial 5 year contract wouldn't actually run out until year 15.
Yes it's a nearly impossible scenario, just stating that I think only years worth repeating every year should trigger automatic extensions.

There's always the chance WSU would be a bubble team in that case and there'd be no NCAA tournament bid, so it ups the incentive to win the conference tournament and get the auto bid. Something like this year, where they're 12th in the standings and have to win 5 games, is the unusual case where it could be hit, but if nothing else, it gives the coach a big incentive to still try.

Likely a nearly impossible scenario like you said. I'm sure HCPM would rather hit the milestone with 25+ wins because that would likely lead to bigger paydays down the road with either contract extensions or other schools luring him away with more money. Not responsible for damage from posts that sail over the reader's head.

Also, while recognizing neither is likely to happen, winning the conference tournament gets you 1.6 mil, a Natty 100K......something seems off.
Not saying it's right, but winning the regular season conference title would seem more in line for an extension.
