This is warped. Nope. This is not a throwaway year. You're acting like this is the MT era coming off the 90s with no NIL or portal.

Is mills supposed to fund nil? Last time I checked WSU was offering cheese sandwiches for nil.

      • My Grandmother used to say want in one hand and **** in the other, see which one gets full first.

in this case if you want you need to be upping your SASO and throwing a pile of dough in the NIL pot.

Even if we get some overlooked players, if they have a good season they are gone.

Money talks. That’s all any more.

Not sure how many on this board can make a real difference. I'm guessing that a lot of the ones that could make a difference pulled their support, or at least, greatly reduced it due to the firing of Marshall. Until that relationship changes, we're probably going to continue down the same bumpy road.

I think you hit the nail on the head. Until the grumpier donors who still defend Marshall wake up, we're in trouble. Ya know, back in THEIR day it was just called a little bit of tough love. Shaq is lucky he didn't have to walk to campus uphill both ways in the snow, like they did.

I doubt most of the donors are still withholding money because of Marshall. I get that they wouldn't donate for Boatright as there was no faith there. But Saal and Mills have to make the donors believe there's something worth investing in. People with money don't generally get or keep money because they just throw it at anything and everything.

I'd guess that the hiring of Mills didn't inspire them, like it didn't inspire many of us. The on court results haven't done much to inspire anyone either. They need to do a better job of making their case and why they deserve the kind of financial support that is being requested.

I'm happily giving money this year for a program I believe in. I don't have millions to throw around so it doesn't much matter, but investing in something you don't believe in is just dumb.

Yeah, this is a head coaches job that they don't necessarily want to do, but its a necessity for the program. Saal should also be facilitating these opportunities. Arguments about coaching faults aside, I could see Mills being pretty endearing to donors.

                • Well said, Sub. Build it and they will come but we HAVE to do some successful rebuilding next season..........and keeping 4-5 key players. The fan base can only be rebuilt by winning but until we get to that stage empty seats need to be filled with cheaper ticket prices. Enthusiastic sell out crowds attract better recruits and better recruits means better teams. Even if you get down to $10 general admission tickets you still make money on concessions. Two kids in free with an adult whatever it takes to fill the seats. Need some bus transportation for the parking far away from the arena.

                  • 3G didn't get everything he wanted from the jump. His comp and access to donors, money, etc came with winning. Earned, not given.

In our current college athletics paradigm, can you build it without a healthy NIL warchest? As I've said before, I fear we will get stuck in the catch-22 of "I won't give till I see results/we can't get results until we get enough giving". I do agree getting more fans in the seats is a good goal. Empty seats generate absolutely zero revenue.

It's not all about seeing results. It's about believing in the product. If they don't believe in Saal or Mills, why would they throw away money? It's their job to convince the donors that they are the right people for the job and are worthy of such donations.

I have to admit, as much as I love WSU and the men's basketball program, if I were one of those sitting on multi-millions I wouldn't be convinced to give based on what I've seen. Now, if I were one of those people I'm sure I'd have a little more access and discussions with those within the department and it would be on them to convince me that what I'm seeing isn't what we should expect with this team in place. Who knows how those conversations would go, but if they're being had right now, they're obviously not going well.

I am not sure about that premise at all but you might be correct.

So you think we had a roster that was going to win the AAC?

What you make fun of (tough love) is exactly what Shaq's mother wanted from Marshall for her son. I believe Shaq left to go home one time (because he was PO'd) and his mother told him, in no uncertain words, to get his tush back to Wichita and she also let fHCGM know what she told him. Marshall could have had Shaq leave permanently, but he didn't. As a senior, before the first tournament game, Shaq, after being asked by a reporter, said that he was good with Marshall and hoped Marshall felt the same about him.

I believe that Shaq so respected his mother, that he honored her wishes, even after her death. Marshall, too, had honored Shaq's mother's wishes, after her passing to not kick him off the team. It wasn't until years later after things just continued to not work out for that Shaq that he gave Mushmouth an interview and the rest is history.
