  • Pick Up 6/5

I went and watched the first two pick-up games today. Disclaimer: I'm not 100% positive I knew who all the newcomers we're so if I mistaken someone please forgive me.

    Game 1
Skins: DW, MA, TC, CE, EO
Shirts: JM, FVV, NW, JW, CH

Skins won the first game pretty easily. The Shirts weren't moving the ball well and the skins had several guys driving to the hoop.

Williams: I saw the slasher we all know today. Expect him to be the starting PG.
Armstead: Dude has some pounds on him. He picked a few steals, the Oregon steals record is legit. Kid had a nice take to the bucket in Game 1.
Cotton: Hit a three in game one, rebounded well and played hard. He'll see a good deal of minutes this year.
Early: Hit a few deep balls, definitely has range. HUGE WINGSPAN, HUGE. However I didn't remember seeing him drive to the bucket.
Orukpe: At times made a few good post moves and finished an alley-oop. He struggled to finish one time down the court though, probably missed 4 bunnies.
Mitchell: Hit a few triples. Not big enough to play the SF position, might see minutes at the SG.
Van Vleet: You can tell the vets want to show this kid his place. But FVV has some handles, and even in a pick-up game you can see the wheels turning. Most of the time he was looking to get his teammates involved but he did make a smoothe drive down the lane with a sweet floater off the glass.
Wiggings: Nick looks pretty thin, needs to beef up. Don't remember him doing much in the game.
White: I think most of us know Jake White isn't the type of player to shine in a pick-up game. Before the season starts however expect him to be battling for a starting position.
Hall: He looked uninterested. At least he's on campus and playing.

    Game 2
Skins: DW, MA, TC, CE, EO
Shirts: RB, RV, EW, DG, CH

Shirts suprisingly got the win in game 2. Ron Baker went off, scoring 9 of the 11 team points.

Baker: Goodness. Where to start? He hit 4 triples, had a sweet drive to the bucket, and still managed to share the ball. I don't think he missed a shot. I had trouble believing the reports about Ron during past pick-up games but wow, he's really got some skill.
    Vautravers: Uh....
Wessel: Still looks awkward on the offensive end. We know the kid can shoot it fairly well but I just dont see him as ready to contribute.
Green: Very raw. Reminds me a lot of Arbry Butler. His jumpshot is a little odd. Redshirt?

And you can't change the thread title either with the new ShockerNet (or at least I have not figured out how to do that).

Never hurts to have some clairvoyance around though.

Thanks for the report @shocks02, we know what day you meant.

Don't feel bad. My sprinkler system went off today and I thought I had it set to go off on Monday's. Looked at my controller and noticed I input the wrong calendar date so I am actually running a day behind, so that means I actually got your report two days before it happened. Cool!

I took a Delorean ride back and fixed the date problem. Hopefully I didn't cause any temporal rifts.

Really wanting wessel and wiggins to have a good season this upcoming year, sounds like this season will be one to remember.

I was at the same shoot-a-round and saw a very impressive shooting demonstration by several players. As stated above, Ron Baker, was hot as fire. In one game he hit seven of eight shots and was not forcing any of them. I was very impressed with the E O. He seemed much more fluid and made some really good power moves to the basket. Joe Mitchell, came out and warmed up by hitting many three-point shots. Then we got on the court he continued his hot shooting I was very impressed with his play. Cleanthony Early, who looks to be shorter than he is listed at, demonstrating that he can drill the three-point shot. Nic Wiggins, has come in on the slim side but Kerry should take care that. Wiggins runs the court extremely well and crashed the boards several times getting nice rebound. Overall we will be a very athletic team even more so than last year. We have many options on shooting from the outside and our"bigs" should be able to pound the board and score. If these multi talented young men can form a cohesive unit with our returning veterans we will have excellent team to watch.

From early reports I'm guessing that HC3G has moved from rebuilding to reloading. Going to be interesting to see how he distributes minutes in the 1-3 or if he goes to a 1-4 system. The only position that appears to be less than 4 deep is center.

Talked to a buddy of mine that was at this same scrimmage and he raved on about Baker. " Swish, swish, swish, etc." That has also been what I have witnessed when I have seen him scrimmage. Also, he felt EO matched up very tough versus Carl Hall. FVV was the impressive passer with a nice shooting range and touch. Joe Mitchell can stroke it from the outside and did so before and during the scrimmage. Armstead did not shoot much but made most of what he did shoot. He D's it up and will be solid. He said that D-Will had an off day but still is a player. Early and Wiggons did not sweep him off his feet but mentioned they are indeed keepers and will score points along with shooting range. Cotton has toned muscles as though he spends plenty of time with Kerry (as does Joe Mitchell) and will be in the mix. Green did not tear it up but it was just one scrimmage. White he felt will contend for playing time inside and maybe get some starts. These were the only players he mentioned as being there that day. Keep the reports coming.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.
