  • Today in Shockers Sports History: January 15th

For the day, the Shockers are:
    15 and 18

    Regular Season (Games of Interest):
2012 – Won at Indiana State in Terre Haute, Ind. 75-65. David Kyles and Toure Murry scored 16 points apiece and Wichita State defeated Indiana State 75-65 on Sunday night. Ben Smith scored 10 points and Garrett Stutz had eight points and 11 rebounds for the Shockers (15-3. 6-1), who kept pace with No. 23 Creighton for the lead in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State is 5-0 on the road this season.

2011 – Won at Drake in Des Moines, Iowa 68-54. Aaron Ellis scored 12 points and pulled down seven rebounds to lead Wichita State past Drake 68-54 on Saturday night. The Shockers (16-3, 6-1 Missouri Valley) led 32-27 at halftime after shooting 53.8 percent from the field in the first half. The Bulldogs (7-11, 2-5) began the second half with a 7-3 run to cut the lead to 35-34, but the Shockers answered by scoring 10 straight points to put the game out of reach. Demetric Williams, who went 3 for 3 from long distance, finished with 11 points for Wichita State and David Kyles added 10 points. J.T. Durley pulled down 10 rebounds for the Shockers.

2007 - Beat Creighton Wichita 62-59. Kyle Wilson scored a career-high 25 points Monday night, including two clutch free throws with seven seconds to play, as Wichita State beat Creighton 62-59. The Shockers (12-6, 3-4 Missouri Valley Conference) have won consecutive games for the first time since starting the season 9-0 and rising as high as No. 8 in the polls. But Wichita State couldn't shake the Bluejays, who trailed 57-56 after Anthony Tolliver's dunk with 2:44 to play. Wichita State built the lead to 60-56 on free throws, but Couisnard fouled Nate Funk on a 3-point shot with 20 seconds to play. He made just one free throw, then hit a jumper with 11 seconds remaining to pull the Blue Jays to within one. With the Shockers clinging to a 60-59 lead, Wilson made both ends of a one-and-one, then Wichita State's P.J. Couisnard blocked Funk's 3-point try at the buzzer.

1994 – Beat Northern Iowa in Wichita 77-71

    1983 – Beat Drake Wichita 68-59

1981 – Beat New Mexico State in Wichita 74-68 (OT)

1977 – Won at Bradley in Peoria, Ill. 87-74

    1940 – Beat Fal YMCA-Mexico City in Wichita 46-13

1931 – Won at Tulsa in Tulsa, Okla. 28-26 (OT)

1907 – Beat Lewis Academy in Wichita 41-12. The game was played at Red Man’s Hall.

1931 - 28 freakin’ points and we even played overtime. SMH.

I remember Shocker fans were up in arms and the team was teetering on disaster. With Ross and I long gone like a turkey through the corn, the ‘U’ had an anemic offensive and couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn… 2022-‘23 is deja vu all over again.

2007 gets forgotten because the rest of the season basically sucked, but that win was fantastic. When Nate Funk went to the line late for 3 free throws, the crowd was loud but slightly reserved because it was expected that Funk, a great shooter would make his free throws. When he missed his first free throw, the Roundhouse unleashed a fury rarely heard. Funk would recover and make his second free throw but missed his third.

In the closing seconds, Creighton needed a 3 to tie and Funk was again the shooter. PJ blocked the shot and preserved the win.

This was my off-beaten-path all-time favorite win.

Man Nate Funk was tough in a Creighton sort of way. Dude was a baller.

PJ sent that last jumper right down his throat. Glorious.

Was that the year (or 2) before the infamous P'Allen punt?

P'Allen Stinnett, everything for Creighton that Teddy Allen could have been for Wichita State.

            Yeah, I think so.

2008: P’Ussy’s punt and low-five to ref too, I believe.
2009: Blackout. Turning point in 3G era
2010: Revenge game for 1.9. Oddly enough played on 1/9. P’Ussy for a technical and the CKA rightfully jeered the hell out of him.

That Mexico City YMCA win is intriguing for about 100 reasons.....
