  • Woohoo! Some scrimmage info in shockwaves :) I'm sure you will all have eventually seen it, but here you go. Trop always hooks me up when I need a fix.

Gotta love some reason to believe Carl's offense will be ready to go, Cotton could give everyone a run for their money & Derail is making Cle get his motor going!

    • Nice write-up by Paul with a pretty positive tone. Sounds like Paul expects us to have a significantly different offensive approach this year than last, but we will see. He also said he has not been gorging on pickup basketball and it is hard to tell how a team will look in an organized offense against a much tougher and organized defense.

The early sense I get is that this team could generate a lot of offense and maybe make a living off there defense if they buy into that approach as at team and with our depth there is no reason we can't simply grind on most opponents for 40 minutes and wear them down.

Generally, though I was pleased with the tone of Paul's report. I kind of got the feeling he might be holding back a bit (despite his effusive praise of Tekele, the guy who rarely get's talked about to any great degree on ShockerNet).

Don't know if EO played the day Paul was watchig or not since he did not mention the big guy.

      • For the record, I love Tekele Cotton.

I have no idea how PT is going to work at the guard position. You'd think there MAY be as many as five that play either PG or SG in a rotation. Williams, Armstead, Baker, Wiggins, FVV, Cotton. At least one of those isn't playing much, if at all. The only way everyone on this list plays is if Wiggins does nothing but relieve Early (more or less) on the wing and Wessel continues to sit on the bench. But even with that, I think the 5th guy isn't seeing a lot of court time.

It's a nice problem to have and will be interesting to see how it works out.

        • I think EO will be much improved. I think Armstead will lead the league in steals. I think Early starts from day 1. I KNOW Cotton will play, and play a LOT.

          • Yeah I was digging the praise on cotton because to me, he is one if the variables that changes the TALK about all this depth into actual depth. He was before his time as a freshman in a lot of ways and we only forget about that when we think about our great recruiting class this year. Everyone knows armstead may lead the league in steals, but cotton made a name for himself stealing the ball too. We might have two stealing fiends on the perimeter. Half court offense may be the last thing to develop, but we may not need one right away if there are a million turnovers and everyone is skilled off the dribble. Wouldn't that be an entertaining change of pace?

            • We may find out that fvv and cotton are every bit as good as armstead and dwill overall. The 5th man may have to be Mitchell, and we may not even need wiggins at SG unless in an effort to create a nightmare matchup. He and early can battle all season long for that starting 3 and coach can do the 'perfection or bench' thing with them. Then we can sit back and watch baker and wessel dominate when the other team has no heart left and we send in our waaay too good for cleanup crew in there to close out games.

                  • This years team is likely to see a lot of zone. Mediocre perimeter shooting with three guys that can get to the rack and three guys that can post you up in the lane is going to lead to defenses packing it in. On the defensive boards, it may be best if we allow EO and Hall to clear the lane and send everyone else on a dead sprint for a layup.

With nothing much happening, here's something to try. Take 4 categories, 2 offensive such as shooting and assists, and 2 defensive, such as steals and rebounds. Now rank these 6 guards on how you feel they would finish in each of these categories. For instance, you might rank Armstead #1 in the steals category and VanVleet #1 in the assists category, etc.

Now assign points for each place in the categories (6 points for 1st, 5 points for 2nd, ... 1 point for 6th). Then add up the points for each player and see how they rank.

When I did it, my ranking were:

                      1-Armistead
                      1-Wiggins
                      3-Cotton
                      3-Williams
                      5-VanVleet
                      6-Baker

You could do this for the front court players using the shooting, assists, rebounds, and blocks categories, or something like that.

Wiggins wasn't brought here to back up Early on the wing. Wiggins will play SG, SF. Early will play SF & PF (more PF than people think). I just see a higher level team with Wiggins at SF & Early at PF with Hall at the 5.

Fine with me. I really like the sound of that lineup, too.

                            • I don't want Wiggins backing up Early at SF and want him to be playing primarily SG. Early should spend most if not all his time at SF. I was just throwing out a possibility if trying to find PT for another guard.

                              • From what I have seen, I would want both Early and Wiggins in the lineup. However, if Wiggins plays good enough D for Coach Marshall to approve, Wiggins will be one of our very best players this Season IMO.
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.
