    Houston v WSU.PNG

Have to figure this game is in contention. The box score is deceptive because WSU essentially quit playing for a stretch when they were down by 20 and then made it closer in garbage time (which was basically the last ten minutes of the game). Didn't Grant Sherfield secretly quit the team for a few days after this one?

Fortunately or unfortunately, I missed that one due to a work obligation. I remember checking on the score towards the end, thinking WTF!?!

There isn’t with the current status quo.

Very true. I at least have hope that "status quo" won't be accepted going forward. If things are as bad or even worse than last year, I think changes can and will happen.

That said, I was referring to an answer to "what game was worse than that."

For those of you without a memory, WSU on 2/20/2022 lost to Houston 76-74 in double overtime. That does not qualify as an "ass-kicking" where I come from.

I know it has been a long time, but WSU finished the conference in seventh place, not 9th, 10th, or 11th place.

The "ass-kickings" were in reference to the beatdowns received from Memphis, not Houston. WSU has matched up pretty well with Houston the last couple of seasons.

Talent wise, I consider Memphis and Houston to be fairly equal, so it is amazing how all of IB’s games vs Memphis have been awful, yet all of the Houston games have been competitive games where the Shockers could have won or even did win.

Sorry for my misunderstanding. I apologize for that. Memphis has a lot more talent than Houston or the rest of the conference. Their problem is consistently playing at a high level.

They always manage to get up for WSU.

I know how Memphis plays, let's see if I can explain it. Memphis does not play defense the way most teams do. Memphis will let you shoot the three and send the defensive player to their offensive end of the court. Their philosophy is that they will score more open dunks before your defense is set than you will hit open three-point shots.

Let's take Dexter Dennis as an example. Memphis will let him shoot a three and his man goes to their offensive end when Dexter shoots.

When Dexter misses, they throw the ball to his man who is wide open under their basket for a dunk. WSU doesn't get 3 points and Memphis scores 2 points without WSU getting to play defense.

That is hard to stop. The bottom line is to beat Memphis, WSU has to have at least 3 players that can hit a lot of open 3's. In the last few years, WSU hasn't had those types of players.

                    • Memphis does kick our ass, but they were pre-season Top 5 or 10 with Wiseman and company. Year after year the pundits say they’re contenders yet fail to account for their head coach’s abilities to help them underperform. The fact that they own us has nothing to do with their own failings. Tulsa owns Memphis and that also means Jack squat.

This! They are a perenial under achiever. Not saying they shouldn't be ranked but it should be taken with a grain of salt given past results vs. preseason hype.

                        • Memphis is most definitely overhyped garbage every year. Whoopy do they made the second round for the first time in a decade. Yeehaw. Still didn’t live up to their Top 10 preseason garbage.

                          • When I think about the talent that Memphis has and what it would take to get it, a quote from Bob Sugar comes to mind.

Yeap. And Kevin Sampson totally dominated Marshall. 5 wins and 1 loss. YIKES !!!!!!!!! Talk about crying like a little girl.
