I also understood that retention bonuses wete cumulative. This made his autorenewable contract such nice deal for both sides. I understand Calipari's contract is similar in structure.

I found this article interesting:
Apparently the VCU students get a lot of the credit for keeping Shaka Smart in the fold.
According to VCU's 2011-2012 university budget plan, $732,900 for pay increases for Smart and his staff came from "changes in university fee-supported activities."
The mandatory university fee at VCU was $1,587 in 2010-2011, of which $559, or 35%, went to athletics. That fee rose to $1,637 in 2011-2012, of which $610, or 37%, goes to athletics, according to figures provided by Pamela DiSalvo Lepley, executive director of university relations.
The fee is paid by all full-time students in the undergraduate, graduate and professional schools and are prorated for part-time students. VCU has 25,647 full-time equivalent students and they get free admission to athletics events; 1,800 to to 2,000 men's basketball tickets are reserved for them and some students were turned away just three times this season, Lepley said.
The university fee also supports such things as facilities, student commons and activities, student health services, recreational sports and parking and transportation. Some of those areas also had increases that contributed to the fee increase of about $50 from the year before; $31 of the increase went for athletics.
There is no breakdown provided on students' bills that explains how much of the fee goes to athletics.
"I talked to a lot of students about this and the consensus is they're OK with it," said Asif Bhavnagri, president of VCU's Student Government Association. Smart is "a great coach who gives us national recognition and we're willing to pay a little more to keep him."
Teague said, "The student fee at VCU is ranked in the bottom third in the state of Virginia. Within the student fee is the athletic fee, and the percentage of our athletic fee is in the lower half as well. We're not gouging our students, by any means."
But VCU funnels money toward the athletics department in other ways. According to a document VCU filed with the NCAA in January, the department got $15.6 million of its $19.9 million in revenue from student fees in 2010-2011. The document said the department had $21.4 million in expenses — a shortfall of about $1.5 million.
Pam Currey, VCU's associate vice president for finance and administration, said about $610,000 of the gap was filled by money for renovation and repair projects from the department's reserve fund. The department also got proceeds from non-athletics events at VCU's arena and more than $600,000 for arena debt service from soft drink royalties brought in through a VCU business unit that includes dining services, retail and parking. Altogether, that means the athletics department received closer to $16.5 million that it did not generate.

If a non-BCS school wants to keep their coach, theoretically, they should expect to pay more than a BCS school considering they don't have some of the perks of being in a top conference. A salary of 2.5mm will most likely keep HCGM forever. Anything less and we are rolling the dice.

Either their figures are wrong, or our figures are wrong? I thought he made 900k with a 150k bonus each year he stayed, which wasn't added on top, so basically he made $1,050,000. Hmmm....

If this is correct, only 26 coaches make more than Marshall (of those listed). Outside of Memphis, he is the highest paid non-BCS coach. If his next contract is to be 2.5 mil+ that would narrow down the potential schools to nine with Texas at #10 with a 2.4 mil salary. So if you go by this, one of those 10 schools would be his next jump. My guess is we will be seeing Mr. Marshall in Koch for awhile. Good news for Shocker nation.

Relatively speaking, Tad Boyle is a steal at $580,000. I am also surprised that Bill Self makes twice as much as Roy Williams.
I think we should do everything we can to keep Coach Marshall but really all of these salaries are totally ridiculous.
We are paying a coach almost a $1.5 million a year and he has only been to the ncaa tournament once and has yet to win a single game in the ncaa tournament with WSU. He is yet to win one single Valley championship.
I mean it really is madness. But we have to do what it takes to remain competitive.

He just won a Valley Title....
Look at his trend line and he's being paid accordinly. If we weren't paying him, he wouldn't be as willing to hang around and see what he can do. Then we'd be like MSU and searching for a new coach every 5 years if we're lucky.

This is also why why I mentioned to those Cock fans that were visiting that he'd make about 1.5 here next year and would probably have to offer around 2.5 to get him interested.
Who knows. But for now, I'm going with I was right :D"It's amazing to watch Ron slide into that open area, Fred will find him and it's straight cash homie."--HCGM

Sub- I said championship referring to the tournament championship. He did win the regular season title this year which is very good, but is winning one regular season title and one birth but no wins in the dance really worth nearly $1.5 million a year?
Like I said we need to be competitive and we need to do what it takes to keep him, but I just think the escalation of ALL of these coaches salaries really is madness. Especially in a lagging economy with many of the teams fans struggling to be able to afford tickets.
It is what it is. And I am afraid with these new huge football TV contracts just starting to kick in, the escalation will probably get even worse.

It's still the market rate. You either pay the rate or you lose your coach and pay a lesser man less money and then lose money with a less successful program. If the fans stop showing up and money becomes an issue, things will change. But that's not the case yetInfinity Art Glass - Fantastic local artist and Shocker fan
