  • USA Today - Marshall made $1.482 Million

Either their figures are wrong, or our figures are wrong? I thought he made 900k with a 150k bonus each year he stayed, which wasn't added on top, so basically he made $1,050,000. Hmmm....

That add-on started some years ago. I think there are about 3 of them tacked on to the $900K base now. Thorw in some incentives for winning the Valley title and making the NCAA's and the $1.4M looks about right. That's where I thought he was this year.

Throw in the fact that basketball is the #1 sport at WSU. He's an absolute hero in the community. 7 years at $2.5M (which was reported as the number required to talk to Marshall) isn't out of line for taking on a questionable program with a rebuilding job needed (UNL , USC)..
The future's so bright - I gotta wear shades.

Without the actual contract, who really knows. But here is what was reported: "$900,000 plus $150,000 for every year he is at Wichita State."

There is no way to get from $900,000 + X times $150,000 and get to $1,450,000 if X is an integer.

Bottom line, who really knows outside of Gregg and WSU?

I guess I was under the impression that the 150k wasn't tacked on every year. Hmmm. It would make sense if he got that 150 every year though. Either way, it's great.

This is exactly how I've understood it. Many on here said that wasn't the case though and it was just 150k on top of the 900 every season. Which to me was a bit odd. Whereas you grow the contract by that much every year, that gives more incentive to stay put. This is also why why I mentioned to those Cock fans that were visiting that he'd make about 1.5 here next year and would probably have to offer around 2.5 to get him interested.

Who knows. But for now, I'm going with I was right :D

Except his contract auto-renews, right? So it increases by $1M every 7 years, roughly? That seems like it could price him out of WSU's budget over time. Although I guess if the salaries of coaches keeps increasing like it has, it might just match inflation.

Most coaches usually have contractual bonuses for conference championships and NCAA bids.

I think a slow increase in pay is very doable for WSU. I'm sure they have a fund that is paid into and the largest donors are supportive of it. So if it were a giant increase it could hurt, but slow and steady isn't a big deal. And maybe there's a cap to it at some point that has been agreed to?

I never understood the idea of $150k per year as a bonus. Why not just make the base 1,050,000? If he's here he gets paid. If not he doesn't. A bump of 150k per year makes a lot more sense. 1.4 is probably right.

15% per annum is not exactly slow.

It is when compared to jumping him straight from 900k to 1.5mil or more.

He's offered to allow access to his W-2....shouldn't be hard to verify.

I found his old contract. Not the most recent one, but it's interesting to read the wording on it.

I told everybody he made 1.4mm this year. There was a national article last year detailing the fact that he made 1.3mm.
