  • Greatings from VCU

    Hello Shockers.

Draft placement discussion aside, I'm excited about this matchup. I'm sure you remember last years close BB game at your place. We've lost a lot and reloaded for this years 28-6 (15-3) team.

We lost a lot of production in four senior starters in Rozzel, Skeen, Nixon and Rodriguez that were the core of our Final Four run. We return one senior in Bradford Burgess, who has struggled at times this year being 'the' guy, but holds the NCAA record for consecutive starts at 144. He does lead the team with 13 points per game, but you can't sleep on anyone as throughout the season we have had many different players fill it up.

    Players stepping up.
Juvonte Reddic. Athletic big man that can run the floor who has improved with more playing time in his sophomore year.
DJ Haley. More minutes from the 7ft big man as he has improved for his sophomore campaign.
Darius Theus. Playing as a backup PG for his first two years at VCU, many were concerned about his ability to run the point. His performance this year has surprised some, with a 2.2 to 1 AST/TO ratio, 8.6 PPG and nearly 2 steals per game.
Troy "Trey" Daniels. 3-bombs away, Troy is hitting 38.5% from three this season (234 attempts) and has a tendency to drop 5 of them on you.

    Key additions:
Briante Weber. Recognizable by his headband, Bri is a freshman guard and a member of the All-CAA Defensive team, he is averaging 2.2 steals in 19 minutes per game good for 76 on the season. He is lightning fast and will pick your pocket before you know it.
Treveon Graham. Freshman guard out of Washington DC, Treveon is more offensively minded. He has an ability to slash and draw fouls, with 181 FGA and 118 FTA.

What has been your big changes this year from last? See you guys in Portland!

Edit: Bugger, typo in the title and I can't edit it. Doh!

Our big change is that we are better.

However, I wouldn't say we've changed too much. We lost Durley, Blair, Hatch, Ellis, and our Locker Zen Guy Derek Brown.

We've got some players stepping up:

Demetric Williams, G, Will guard the heck out of the opposing team. Shifty in transition. Has been looking to score more.

Tekele Cotton: Giving WSU good minutes from the bench, can score, but doesn't always look to.

Toure Murry, G, one of the best overall players in the MVC.

Carl Hall, F, Junior College transfer, strong, balls out for rebounds. Got a nice hook shot (not always the best looking).

Both of our 7 footers are improved as well!

You guys remember Carl Hall don't you? He's our first big off the bench. Looking forward to a good match-up!

Actually, we did graduate 4 solid seniors from our NIT Championships team. But we also had a core of very solid 5 juniors (Garrett Stutz, Toure Murry, Joe Ragland, Ben Smith and David Kyles) on that team that for the most part have all stepped up their games and we have had a better regular season, by quite a bit, then we did last year.

We have added a very solid Juco power forward, Carl Hall to the mix and one we have a returning junior, Demetric Williams, who has also stepped up his game strongly. We have a second 7 footer, Ehimen Orukpe, who does not score a lot but is very disruptive on defense and we have a couple of true freshman capable of giving us very solid minutes in Tekele Cotton in the backcourt and Jake White in the frontcourt.

We have no stars and any one of 6 (maybe 7) players is capable of leading us in scoring on a given night. We have been lead in scoring this year by Stutz (10 times), Ragland (11 times), Murry (7 times), Smith (4 times), Kyles (4 times) and Hall (3 times). Williams has the potential to lead the team also but he has become more of a past first guard and a defensive specialists.
