  • I'm not sure what to think of this game. I did want a BCS mid-league fat-cat though (Texas? W.Virgin.U?). 'Sounds like the same old VCU to me, but with somewhat different personnel (2011 final four etc.). This one could be another nailbiter?

I don't understand this post. Is this a joke or shtick between you two, one pro-WSU and one pro-VCU?

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

        Whats not to understand....
He comes in and says this should be a sweet 16 matchup and I call him delusional cuz they are a 12 seed.

        • I could be wrong, but I don't think it's a stretch for a 12 seed to make the sweet 16.

VCU is a very good team that we should all respect. I think what he was saying is that it is a shame that we have to meet in the first round and that a non-BCS team will be knocked out early.

          • From Paul Suellentrop's blog:

WSU handled VCU’s pressure last season, committing 10 turnovers. It shot poorly, however, making 9 of 28 shots in the second half. Joe Ragland scored 15 points and Ben Smith added 11. Toure Murry missed 11 of 14 shots and handed out five assists. Garrett Stutz played 11 minutes and scored five points.
Let's hope we shoot the rock better this year.

If Stutz can have a good game against VCU maybe we'll start seeing the confident, Paul Miller esque Stutz from earlier this year. If I knew that guy would show up to evey game in this tournament I would pick us to win the whole thing.

Part of that pick would be my confidence in how good this team can be and the other part my yellow and black underwear.

I didn't like seeing VCU pop up during the selection show. That team makes me nervous. But, if we can pull out a win and get on a roll then watch out.
My definition of a good game from Stutz would be 13 rebounds. Do that, and good things should happen for Wichita State.

That said, I've got Shockers by 10 and you will be meeting Kentucky in the Sweet 16.

                  Good luck!
New Mexico is loaded as per usual, but what about New Mexico State? The one time I watched them play this year, I was impressed.

George Mason made it to the FF as an 11 seed. You should underestimate no one in the tournament.

I fully expect the ball to be run directly at Stutz in an attempt to draw reaches and holds from your guards and contact from Stutz off mismatches. You guys have a much higher ADJT than us, but kenpoms models don't limit pace bias. In fact they're considered a feature rather than a bug which makes sense as stabilization occurs throughout conference play. It's less useful in non-conference matchups that are one time affairs. We have to twist most teams' arms to play at our pace but it sounds like you guys will run and gun. Outcome aside, there's going to be some serious athleticism on display Thursday night.

As for the sweet 16 comment, I think the winner of this game has a great shot at advancing. The style and matchup problems either squad creates for potential opponents outside of Kentucky is very favorable.

I don't have inside information. I remembered 5 years ago when WSU played in Vancouver, Canada (preseason), there were several hundreds Shocker fans, mostly from Seattle. Many grads who worked for Boeing in Wichita were moved to Seattle.

"Those picking VCU over Wichita State this year simply because the Rams reached the final four last season may want to reconsider.

"ESPN Insider's John Gasaway writes today that there's a low probability that the No. 12 seed Rams knock off the No. 5 seed Shockers, and it might not be why you think. It's not because the Rams are overrated or lacking in talent -- they aren't. Instead, Gasaway writes that the Shockers are really good, perhaps better than many realize. Here he is with more on this intriguing matchup.

John Gasaway: The Shockers are better than many realize
"I swear I've been ranking Wichita State in my own top 10 at ESPN since, I don't know, last summer, but everyone and their cousin is still picking VCU in this game. Doesn't anyone listen to me? Mind you, I have the proper awe for what Shaka Smart was able to accomplish this season. He watched four starters walk out the door from last year's Final Four team and somehow propelled his young group to a 15-3 record in the tough CAA. But here's the thing. Wichita State is really good. As in, I think Gregg Marshall's team is the equal of Duke, Marquette or Baylor, to name three. I'll take WSU in this one."

I don't know much about John Gasaway, but that's pretty lofty company he's put us in.

When we are shooting well I think he is on target. Maybe you can say that about a lot of teams. So I guess I might hedge a bit and say we are potentially on par with Duke, Marquette or Baylor.

They, Wichita State, had better be on their P's and Q's. You cannot take ANY GAME for granted in the NCAA turnament. At the least, I would fully expect a dog fight.
