  • How Drexel goes is a referendum on the treatment of schedules vs performance

It is the chicken and the egg again....a pairing of great performance against a weak schedule and how the committee views it...

    Performance...

Drexel is hot...has won 27 games with six losses....went January 2 to March 5 without a loss...

But....RPI is 66 and the SOS is an eye catching 208. 23 of the 27 wins were for wins over teams with an RPI of 100+ and 13 of those wins came from +200 RPI teams.

Drexel has one win over a team of 50 and below RPI and 4 wins under 100 RPI

The question is...how does this stack up to bubble teams from a power conference....I chose Miami as a team on the bubble...

Miami is 18-11....RPI of 56, SOS of 40...two wins over a team 50 & below RPI (one over a current Top Five) and three wins under 100 RPI. One loss over 100 RPI vs three losses for Drexel over 100.

Drexel and Miami pair up fairly decently...Drexel has one more sub 100 RPI win, Miami has better wins...

If the committee wants to see 'em play, Drexel will get the nod....But I don't think that the formulas will be the decider...JMHO

I have no problem with Drexel not getting in...Miami played a much more difficult non-conference schedule. Miami probably doesn't have the chops to get in themselves, but in my opinion, they deserve to get in ahead of Drexel. I will say that Drexel more than passes the eye test and I'd take Drexel v Miami @ Drexel.

I do feel their pain: Drexel, Iona, Middle TN, Valpo, Oral Roberts.

As a fan I think the tournament would be much more interesting with teams like these in at the expense of dropping a handful of BCS teams that might be last in. They may or may not be any better than those BCS teams, it would just be more interesting to see this group of teams IMO.

          Drexel should be in.

Oral Roberts was 5-4 against the top 150 with another 2 losses outside the top 150. Their best win was against a bubble team, Xavier. Is that really a "should be in" type of team?

I will take a team from worse conference over some also ran from a BCS conference any day. If a team cannot have a winning record in their conference then why should they play for a national championship over another team that competed for their conference championship. Of course this is just due to me being tired of having someone like Seth Greenberg (VaTech coach) complaining that his team does not get a night off like Cleveland State against Youngstown State or (WSU against Bradley). VaTech is the "off night" in the ACC this year.

I'm not into RPI like you are. What was ISUR's RPI going into the Shocker game?

ISU Red is now 106 in the RPI. I don't know what it was going into the game, but it wouldn't vary much game to game this late in the season.

I'd wager that if you pose this question on any fan site of a mid major team, there will be a resounding yes for the Drexel's of the world.

Post this up on any BCS fan site, and you'll get a resounding yes for the Miami's of the world.

Also, just as a point of reference, WSU was 20-5 against the top 150 this year with 0 losses outside the top 150.

_kai_, I do feel that Drexel is right on the bubble. Oral Roberts is the team I completely disagree with receiving an atlarge.

                          Kai

I believe that's right. Your viewpoint is usually a reflection of your vantage point.

Facts are facts yet we filter facts in such a way as to support our beliefs and our personal bias.

The question of the value of a body of work can be exceedingly argumentive when there is a wide variance in the teams played and little to no overlap for comparison's sake.

A Miami fan will immediately point to the disparity of SOS between the Canes and Drexel...and will bring up the "quality of schedule" argument...and we have all heard it...."A guy nailing a jackknife doesn't get the points that a guy with a so so performance of a double back full twist does"..yada, yada

A Drexel guy will say...all we can do is beat our schedule and we have done that. If we do that and we can't dance, why bother with this whole charade. Make it BCS only.

There will always be a difference in opinion on the subject as long as there are different vantage points.

                            billybud,

I agree with most of your last post, but I would like to comment on this specific statement. Many people would use this argument to campaign for Drexel getting into the tournament. My response would be:

Lost to Norfolk State (RPI 129)
                            Lost to Delaware (RPI 153)
Lost to Georgia State (RPI 145)

Those 3 games shouldn't eliminate a team from atlarge consideration in and of themselves, but don't try to tell me that Drexel did all they could do with the schedule they were given. We can disagree when comparing resumes, but lets all agree that Drexel put themselves in the place they currently sit. If they would have simply taken care of business in the games they should have won they wouldn't be on the bubble right now. Even just eliminating one of those bad losses (still allowing for two "off nights") would probably have been enough to lock up their bid.

While I might agree with you, I am not a Drexel guy...

Here is the Drexel coach's agrgument/lobby....He, of course ignores the bad losses and focuses on the wins.

"We won 27 games. We lost in the championship. We won the regular season. I think our resume, our stuff, speaks for itself," Flint said after the Dragons' dramatic comeback fell short.

"What do you want me to say? Can we beat teams in the Big Ten, Big 12, Pac 12, Big East? Of course we can," Flint said. "No question about that. I think our league proves that every time we get into the NCAA tournament.

"Should we be in? You win 27 games - what do you want me to do? I won 19 in a row. What do you want me to do? If you can't get in with that, it's pretty hard. It's pretty hard."
