    The Catholic Church.

Wait a second ... we've gone full circle, and it's back to being Creighton's fault!

It's just what referees do in college basketball ... when you're up by 10-15, the calls start magically going the way of the weaker team. And maybe Coach Marshall started getting angry about it ... and maybe our poor shooting made him angrier and angrier, and his anger was directed at the referees, and then calls kept going against us even when the game got close out of spite. And maybe the referees in this league just flat out don't like him, after five years of dealing with someone as competitive as him, and their calls just naturally go against us now. At the end of the day, though, it was our terrible, terrible shooting that let the game get out of hand.
You may think that you don't believe in a conspiracy, but what you described above is, more or less, a conspiracy by definition.

Nah! Creighton is just an unwitting (or perhaps more accurately a witless) pawn. It's the Pope or I am dope! (Don't answer that.)

          Well, it's not.

A conspiracy is a nefarious plot that people have settled down in private and decided on. Or, according to dictionary.com , "an agreement by two or more persons to commit a crime, fraud, or other wrongful act."

I offered that referees always go easier on the calls for a team that's getting blown out. There is no plot to make that team win, simply to make the game slightly more competitive, so by definition that is not a conspiracy to decide the victor. Perhaps a conspiracy to make for more entertaining viewing, but hardly the kind of conspiracy we're discussing.

Referees not liking Marshall is not an organized plot. Not unless they sit down together, talk about how much they dislike him, and go "You know what, let's make sure they lose this game." That, by definition, is a conspiracy. Having a referee dislike you and lean towards the other team when you're yelling at him is unfair, childish, and unprofessional, but not a conspiracy.

By definition, a conspiracy must include multiple people working together. Even if one referee attempted to purposely alter the course of a game, that would not be a conspiracy. That would just be cheating.

A conspiracy doesn't require the clandestine meetings you are talking about here, nor does it even require specific intent. Rather, it just requires a single overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy. As you say, if an official starts making calls that skew against WSU because of their dislike of Marshall, there's your overt act. The fact that multiple officials are doing it, there's your conspiracy.

It's a stretch, and it's kind of a joke, but you said it, not me.

I think your understanding of the definition of conspiracy is faulty.

If I don't like you, and another guy on this forum doesn't like you, that makes multiple people who don't like you. But unless we get together and conspire to do something to you, there is no conspiracy. You're just disliked.

If multiple referees don't like Coach Marshall, and they're unprofessional enough to let that somewhat change the way they call their games, there is not a conspiracy, they're just bad and unprofessional refs. If they get together and conspire to create a desired outcome, now there is a conspiracy.

You know an easy way to tell that you don't actually understand what a word means? When you use that word again in your definition of it. Your definition: "A conspiracy ... requires a single overt act in furtherance of the conspiracy."

Had breakfast this morning with a descendant (def: proceeding from an ancestor or source) of Merriam Webster. This individual cleared up the definition of conspire (def: to join in a secret agreement to do an unlawful or wrongful act, or to use such means to accomplish a lawful end).

A quote from a great SN icon (def: an object of uncritical devotion) Kung Wu..."This subject of conspiracy is as unproductive as predicting the toxic level of SHAT in a cow patty in the hot Texas sun."

Only if you take sports seriously. You do realize that sports is classified as part of entertainment.
