After attending the basketball and the baseball doubleheader today, I took my mom out to dinner. Unfortunatley we walk into THE EL MEXICO CAFE on South Seneca and they have a sign as you walk in that says "Congratulations Jayhawks". I am not sure what the Jayhawks did today to deserve congratulations, I guess they must have beaten Missouri today (I knew they were playing sometime this weekend). But I thought today was the Shockers day.

I was offended by the sign, so when the gal came over to seat us I told her we changed our minds. She said "oh were not that busy". I told her that wasn't why we were leaving. I said we were leaving because I was offended by their sign.

Now if the sign had said "Congratulations Shockers and Jayhawks", I could have accepted that. But no acknowledgment of the local team is something I can't accept.

I do not intend to ever eat at EL MEXICO CAFE again. It won't be easy, we go there at least once a week. Hopefully they will notice we aren't going there anymore and get the message.
Did you tell them it was "just because of their sign" and they assume you don't like KU (because you may be a Missouri fan) or did you explain to them about their local Shockers and that they should at least receive equal love today? Also, depending on who you talked to, the one who made that decision for the sign will probably never know why you no longer frequent them.

I probably should have been a little more clear but I was wearing Shocker gear from head to foot and I still had my beads from the game on. We are regulars and I know the owner and his wife fairly well. Usually one of them is behind the register on Saturday nights, but I didn't see him or I would have said something to him.

We are such regulars that when we are out of town and don't come in, they ask about where we were when we get back.

Remember the sacrifices made by players, coaches and administrators that helped to make today possible.

To that end, let me say thank you and congratulations to a few people that I want to recognize today.

Thank you to Jim Schaus for having the guts and foresight to hire Gregg Marshall.

Thank you to Marty Gross for helping to develop the big men and for your tireless efforts behind the scenes for 4 seasons.

Thank you to past players and coaches for laying the groundwork, whether in success or defeat, to get to this point. Rome was not built in a day. Guys like Jason Perez who gave everything he had to this program and will be there today are as big a part of WSU as anyone.

Thank you to last year's seniors J.T. Durley, Aaron Ellis, Gabe Blair and Derek Brown for bringing the team together and showing everyone what it takes to be champions.

And finally, thank you to Graham Hatch for showing all of us what heart and determination can do and what leadership can accomplish. Without you, this team never gets there.

Today is just as much about these guys as it is about today's team. Remember these people, and if you happen to see any of them here today, don't hesitate to thank them in person and congratulate them. It's their day of celebration just as much as it is anyone else's.

Have fun today folks....days like this don't come along that often. Live the moment.

          GO SHOCKS!!!!!!!
It was a great day to be a Shocker fan, and it was a great senior class that brought this day!

I watched Channel 12 and I thought that their coverage was great. Channel 10's coverage of the Shockers has gone down hill ever since Alan Shope left. It wasn't the best then, but it was much better than it is now.

El Mexico Cafe strikes me as much more of a Shocker kind of place, than a KU elitist, yuppie kind of place. Makes you wonder whether they have a good feel for the make up of their clientele. (Although I suppose I could be wrong about that). I like to see the family restaurants supported, however, so I think perhaps you should just express your thoughts about this to the owners and give them another chance.

OTOH if one thinks (or knows) they are sending a lot of money made in Wichita up to Lawrence to support the Beakers and none or little of their Wichita made money to support the Shockers, then one would probably have to reconsider supporting their establishment.

That's to bad. Forty years ago, KAKE was everything Wichita, including WSU.
"Hank Iba decided he wouldn't play my team anymore. He told me that if he tried to get his team ready to play me, it would upset his team the rest of the season." Gene Johnson, WU Basketball coach, 1928-1933.

You are right. But that was back when they were locally owned. Now they are owned by Gray TV out of Atlanta and they obviously don't care about Wichita.

It does piss me off to no end, that people in this city will choose KU over WSU, especially when they dont have a degree or anything from KU. But they just like them because they are always good.

The Shockers are / should be Wichita's team. It pisses me off to lose recruiting battles for Wichita athletes to KU and KSU. I don't understand it. KU should be the king of Lawrence and K-State...Manhattan. But in Wichita, the Shockers should be King.

Much like Yankee fans... "Damn them all to hell!" :)

I always wish the people in this city would start cheering harder and be better supporters of WSU. Ive been to Creighton games (lived in Omaha awhile) and I would love to see Wichita give the same level of support to the Shockers as Omaha gives to the Bluejays. I didnt see people support Nebraska (at least during basketball season) the way Ive seen some people support KU/KSU here. Granted, Nebraska certainly isnt KU in terms of the success theyve had but most Bluejay fans I knew seemed to take the attitude that no way in heck would they cheer for Nebraska, mainly because Nebraska fans always look down on them (even though Creighton I believe has been the better in the recent era). I dont understand why we dont get that support from the people here. I find that incredibly bothersome. At least people could be more a fan of both than not caring about about WSU.

Why? Let's be real here. It's hard for most people NOT to be a KU fan. All they do is win championships. For the average Joe, what's not to like?

I can think of many things to dislike.

Don't worry too much about it. Just do all you can do and let the rough end drag.

Actually most Wichitans that I know either hate Ku or they could care less about them. I would have been really upset if I had walked into a Wichita restaurant last night (like El Mexico) that had a sign Congratulating the Jayhawks. While I know there are ku fans in Wichita, I really haven't encountered that many of them over the years.
