I would love to see Garrett get the POY award. I don't think anyone was talking about Garrrett as a POY candidiate pre-season although perhap he was mentioned in passing here or there.
Personally, I think the MVC POY award should go to the Shocker senior class, but I guess that's what the Championship trophy is for. I just really enjoy the unselfishness of this team.

I can live with Garrett not getting POY if that is the way it works out, but I will really be depressed if we have to share the regular season championship with Creighton (which I don't think will happen but my crystal ball is in the shop).
I think Garrett, Joe, Toure, Ben and Carl all deserve individual recognition in the MVC post-season awards, especially if we finish strong and take care of the remainder of the team business on our plate.
Garrett would seem to be a slam-dunk for 1st team All-Conference, a POY candidate and he should also be the captain of the Most-Improved Team although they tend to use those specialty team awards to spread the wealth around some of the weaker teams.
Joe, Toure and Ben's problem is they may very well split a lot of votes. Toure will no doubt make the All-Defensive Team and I would think would be at least 2nd Team All-Conference. Ben just seems to do everything so quietly he tends to fly under the radar. Joe is up against some other good point guards in Odum of UNI and Young of CU.
I would think Carl should be on the All-Newcomer team although his stats have faded a little of late.
Garrett, Doug McDermott, Colt Ryan, Kyle Weems and Rayvonte Rice may be the leading candidates for 1st team All-Conference honors.
A lot of good possibilities for the 2nd team. I'm guessing Joe makes it with Ben and Toure receiving honorable mention and Ben being placed on the Most-Improved Team. Other players that are in the hunt would be Antoine Young, Gregory Echinique, Anthony Downing, Anthony James, Taylor Brown, Jake Odum, Dwayne Lathan, Jackie Carmichael, Mamadou Seck and Ben Simons (although Simons may be hurt by missing several games at the end of the season).

DoubleJayAlum, the greatest sCUm poster ever, is a little butthurt on this subject.
He thinks because Garrett has gotten "eaten alive" with the games against sCUm, that he's not legitimate. He says Stutz will get "exposed" in games against BCS opponents in the tournament.
Well DJA, for one, foul trouble kind of took him out of both games. They were bad calls but we really can't determine the "ownage" of Stutz when he's on the bench. And secondly, unlike your team, WSU has several players that can beat you, not just Stutz. Stutz may not be able to match up at times with your vaunted post players, but we smacked your asses around by 20 on your own court without him. I'm pretty sure we can do the same in the NCAA's.
It's nice to see you posting again on various sites DJA. I was worried about your status after you got smacked around on Saturday. It's nice silencing you like that. If you're here lurking, I just wanted to let you know how little you know about certain things.Deuces Valley.
... No really, deuces.

MVC POY
This should settle the debate regarding who is POY in my opinion. Stats from MVC-only games below. Dougie only eclipses Garrett in Points Per Game, but considering he's shot the ball so many more times than GS, he should. Also, GS plays for the MVC #1 seed.
Pts DM 20.9
GS 17.0
Reb DM 8.1
GS 9.1
FG% DM 59.7% (216 attempts)
GS 60.4% (154 attempts)
FT% DM 81.7% (71 attempts)
GS 85.9% (71 attempts)
Blocks DM—N/A
GS—1.2

Historically, there are 5 players on each of the first, second and honorable mention teams. Hard to get more than 3 among those 15 players in a ten team league, especially the way the Valley operates.Last edited by 1972Shocker; February 16, 2012, 04:14 PM.
