GAME RECAP: Wichita State fell apart in the closing seconds of regulation but picked up the pieces to finish off South Florida, 82-77 in overtime at the Yuengling Center.
Tyson Etienne scored 25 points for Wichita State (4-2, 2-0 American) which improbably squandered a five-point lead in the final five seconds of regulation but got five points-each from Etienne and Craig Porter Jr. in overtime to secure its second straight true road win to start conference play.
Alterique Gilbert supplied 10 points and handed out five assists, and Clarence Jackson joined him in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Trey Wade (nine points) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
David Collins paced USF (5-3, 1-1) with 17 points, five assists and three steals. Six of those came at the end of regulation to bring the Bulls back from the brink.
His four-point play with 4.8 seconds to go cut a five-point Shocker lead to one. Trey Wade converted 1-of-2 free throws on the opposite end. Collins sprinted to the far corner and launched an off-balance three that missed badly.
Wichita State celebrated an apparent victory, but officials ruled that Collins had been fouled.
Shocker coach Isaac Brown called timeouts in between each of the three free throws but Collins succeeded in making the first and third tries to send the game into overtime.
Wichita State regrouped to win the game, just as it did after a disappointing first-half performance.
The Shockers trailed by 13 early and managed only 22 points in the first 20 minutes, but more than doubled their production over the next 20 with 48 points on 50 percent shooting.
WSU shot 41 percent for the game and held USF to 33 percent.
The teams combined to shoot 74 free throws with the Shockers converting 22-of-33 to USF's 27-of-41.
WSU center Morris Udeze and Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler battled heavy foul trouble, and USF capitalized with a massive 54-39 rebounding advantage. The Shockers atoned by committing only 11 turnovers to USF's 18.
