  • Wichita State vs. USF Pregame Discussion 3-6-21

    USF (8-11, 4-9) at WICHITA STATE (14-4, 10-2)
    SATURDAY, MARCH 6, 2021 | 12:01 P.M. CT
WICHITA, KAN. | CHARLES KOCH ARENA (25% Capacity, 2,625)
TV: ESPN+ (WstateU has time to work on his weak stream)
    RADIO: KEYN 103.7 FM https://www.radio.com/keyn/listen
SERIES: WSU leads 4-1 (2-0 in Wichita)

LAST: December 22, 2020 in Tampa, FL (WSU 82-77 OT)
    GAME RECAP:
Wichita State fell apart in the closing seconds of regulation but picked up the pieces to finish off South Florida, 82-77 in overtime at the Yuengling Center.

Tyson Etienne scored 25 points for Wichita State (4-2, 2-0 American) which improbably squandered a five-point lead in the final five seconds of regulation but got five points-each from Etienne and Craig Porter Jr. in overtime to secure its second straight true road win to start conference play.

Alterique Gilbert supplied 10 points and handed out five assists, and Clarence Jackson joined him in double figures with 10 points and seven rebounds. Trey Wade (nine points) grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.

David Collins paced USF (5-3, 1-1) with 17 points, five assists and three steals. Six of those came at the end of regulation to bring the Bulls back from the brink.

His four-point play with 4.8 seconds to go cut a five-point Shocker lead to one. Trey Wade converted 1-of-2 free throws on the opposite end. Collins sprinted to the far corner and launched an off-balance three that missed badly.

Wichita State celebrated an apparent victory, but officials ruled that Collins had been fouled.

Shocker coach Isaac Brown called timeouts in between each of the three free throws but Collins succeeded in making the first and third tries to send the game into overtime.

Wichita State regrouped to win the game, just as it did after a disappointing first-half performance.

The Shockers trailed by 13 early and managed only 22 points in the first 20 minutes, but more than doubled their production over the next 20 with 48 points on 50 percent shooting.

WSU shot 41 percent for the game and held USF to 33 percent.

The teams combined to shoot 74 free throws with the Shockers converting 22-of-33 to USF's 27-of-41.

WSU center Morris Udeze and Isaiah Poor Bear-Chandler battled heavy foul trouble, and USF capitalized with a massive 54-39 rebounding advantage. The Shockers atoned by committing only 11 turnovers to USF's 18.

If Yetna and Durr are still out, we need to win this one by 20+ to help the metrics.

Hey, it doesn't matter. We just need to win. Guys have to be focused ready to play tough defense, rebound, make shots and show good basketball IQ. Just win baby.

Will there be a Senior Ceremony? Or will our 2 seniors announce their return for next year ? I bet Wade returns, but Gilbert goes on. Seems like he has been in college forever.

Wade redshirted at UTEP for one of his two years there, so he's been in college as long as Gilbert has. They're both class of 2016. I would be very surprised if either stayed.
“The rebellion on the populist right against the results of the 2020 election was partly a cynical, knowing effort by political operators and their hype men in the media to steal an election or at least get rich trying. But it was also the tragic consequence of the informational malnourishment so badly afflicting the nation. ... Americans gorge themselves daily on empty informational calories, indulging their sugar fixes of self-affirming half-truths and even outright lies.'

There are actually 4 Seniors this year - in addition to Gilbert and Trey Wade, there's also Jacob Herrs and Brycen Bush. I imagine there will be some sort of ceremony for the 4, but it will be interesting to see if it's post-game like in the Marshall era or pre-game.

Clever comment on the weak stream. LOL

They announced last night (on Channel 12 news I think) that the capacity crowd might be increased for this game. Is the 2,625 more than was allowed in the past or has that not been addressed yet?

We haven't come close to the 25% threshold as of yet, so I don't know what difference it makes.

                    Edit

I should say in actual butts in seats.

USF will muck it up so I don't expect a blowout. They can't make a basket but they can certainly make it tough on us. I expect Tyson aand AG to have better games with some of the rust knocked off and I also expect that Morris will play better than he did in the first match. Morris started the season thinking he was a certain type of player, but it seems he's slowly figuring out his strengths and weaknesses. When he plays smart and doesn't force things, he can be really good. Shox by 12.
