  • MGM Resorts Main Event - November 2021

I mentioned the event in the 20-21 season thread, but since it'll be part of the 21-22 season, I though I'd make a separate post for it. The contract for the event can be found at https://openrecords.wichita.edu/view...og/entry/1288/ and lists the following:

The entire Multi-Team “Exempt” Event, governed by NCAA By-Law 17.3.5.1.1, shall consist of sixteen (16) college basketball games featuring eight (8) Division I men’s college basketball teams, four (4) host teams and four (4) travel teams all TBD, as participants. The event shall be tentatively known as the “MGM Resorts Main Event” (the “Event”).

Participant shall play four (4) games during the Event over a fifteen (15) day period. As a host team, two (2) games will be played as home games at Participant’s designated venue (“Home Games”) on two (2) of the following dates: Nov. 12,2021, Nov. 14, 2021 or Nov. 16, 2021. Two (2) games will be played in Las Vegas, Nevada (“Tournament Games”) on Nov. 19, 2021 and Nov. 21, 2021 at T-Mobile Arena versus opponents to be determined.
The web site for the event is http://romanmainevent.com/ and the Event Details part lists WSU, Arizona, Michigan, and UNLV as participants.

Taylor Eldridge wrote an article regarding the contract and tournament. Here's his tweet and link to the article:

                  Link to tweet - https://twitter.com/tayloreldridge/s...33658987921409
                  Link to article - https://www.kansas.com/sports/colleg...249463000.html

He tagged people at Arizona, Michigan, and UNLV in his tweet. They retweeted things and based on replies to their tweets and postings on the fan forums for those schools, it looks like a lot of people are looking forward to the tournament.

I would venture a guess that TLN just has an alert to open up this website https://openrecords.wichita.edu/view...og/entry/1288/ every morning and view the athletic contracts, and other contracts associated with the Shocker athletic department. It's a coincidence, pure and simple.

Taylor was sitting on it until he could maximize the negative spin by finding more anonymous-only, jaded sources that would quasi-collaborate the tournament announcement. But once TLN went live with it, it forced Taylor's hand. Expect a constant stream of self-referencing on Taylor's Twitter feed until the tournament date comes to a head.

Close - I do check for new requests on a regular basis, but I check the main log instead - https://openrecords.wichita.edu/view-request-log/ - because once a request is made public, such as #1288, then it's closed and no longer updated. For example, if more non-conference contracts are signed, WSU won't add them to the 1288 request, but will appear in a new request if one is made, so one has to check the main page for any updates. I found certain places do better requests than others. The ones who did the 1288 one - a company called Winthrop Intelligence LLC that runs a web site for AD's - tend to ask for some pretty good info. On the other hand, a guy by the name of Andy Wittry, who's a freelance writer, asks for some unusual things and typically begs to have any fees waived :) For example, his last request he asked "a copy of any licensing agreement or contract related to the production of WuShock Wheat beer from Wichita Brewing Company." WSU's response was "There are no records available. The University now considers request #1266 closed"

Most of the stuff recently regarding the basketball team has been requests for Isaac Brown's salary. A guy from USA Today asked in #1238 for "A document — including, but not limited to a payroll record — showing the current annual compensation for men’s basketball interim head coach Isaac Brown, including any amount he is receiving above the amount stated in his Notice of Appointment for fiscal year 2020-2021 that he is receiving as consideration for serving as the interim head coach." and WSU posted a pdf with everything redacted except Brown's name and the amount :)

lol. I figured maybe he either saw this thread or someone contacted him asking him if things were true. I imagine his article wouldn't have been taken seriously if he had said "according to Ted Lasso's neighbor....." :) But I thought he'd at least get a confirmation from the athletic department vs just using the open record request as his source.
