  • The Future of College Basketball

I have been thinking about this topic to toss out for the wise masses on SN to discuss. Here are some lingering questions that have yet to be answered:

Future of NCAA: What will happen with the NCAA as we know it? Will SEC football start a new power structure? Are teams like Kansas and Arizona waiting to get punishment handed down and then seceding to avoid it? Can payment of players actually be regulated without a governing body?

Is college basketball going the way of tennis, golf and the Euro systems, where the extremely gifted and talented enter a professional track at an early age and the other players are brought up through true amateurism while getting their shot as a professional later?

Finally what will the social justice movement do to the sport? Are we going to see a balance of power shift to HBCUs as they begin to sign more and more high level talent.

Just some things to kick around that touch on subjects other than CoVid and our coach’s departure.

I think we will see a big realignment of NCAA Div 1 sports in the next 3 years. The “big boys” are tired of playing nice with the smaller D1 schools and will break away and force the NCAA into BCS/FCS split for all sports and traditional March Madness will go away as we know it. I think the key question is where will the line be drawn? I think the top 7 conferences at the most will make it into the upper division. We need to hope the Big East remains powerful and that the AAC can improve. If both falter I can see a cut line at the P5 level. I believe that anyone below the cut line will fall into FCS like obscurity. We need to return to relevance quickly.

We've been hearing this same theory for at least 15 years.

I think it’s a process that has been playing out over the last 15 years. Teams changing conferences, new TV deals, new RPI calculations, etc. Every change that’s been made has been detrimental to the little guys. I’d watch to see what happens with paying athletes. I see that as the straw that will break the camels back and force the breakup.

I believe the NCAA will stay in place, the P-5 will become four, 16 team conferences. Covid moved ND to a defacto full member of the ACC.

The Big 12 will die, with four openings in the Pac, two in the B1G, two in the SEC and one ACC opening. We will have G-5 schools and the Big 12 fighting over nine slots.

Basketball will likely remain mostly unchanged as 64 teams will need competition and buy games. The Big Dance produces to much money to mess with.

There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

I think we will see a talent split between college basketball and some other entity that grooms players to play professionally, especially if paying athletes doesn’t happen. Maybe KungWu or WuDrWu can explain the soccer model the rest of the world uses to cultivate talent.

                        Words from n roll...

We all have many things to think about, the trick is to wonder, and not worry...especially about unknown futures that we have no control over. And by "we" I mean true shocker nation as a whole.
What Shocker athletics need to do is simply win. Whether that is through playing angry, playing smart, playing as a team, or playing however the team is molded, winning can take 90 percent of the worries off the board. Just Win.

Personally, I see a roster with tons of talent, in all aspects of development. Not a single player has peaked, and the current class spread is the beginning building block for 21-22 HCFSC (head coach future shocker coach) to begin in a beautiful situation.

I don't think we will lose players to transfer, I believe we may even keep a player for the extra eligibility year.

(***) If you break down the makeup of this team individually and as a whole, cohesive unit, we check all the boxes for a PROGRAM that can match the success of the prior decade, if not exceed it with the proper replacements/recruits. ---The 3 star label is so that you can more easily argue this particular point with me. I'm feeling quite debatey in regards to the shining potential of this roster.

I have such high belief that with all things considered that have and will continue to affect this crazy season, that the Shocker name will be called out on Selection Sunday. I see it, I believe it, I know it.

If we happen to get the new coach selection wrong, we will stumble, but we shall correct it. And, just as the baseball team is now, post greatest sport coach in school history, we will rise from the ashes like some creepy-ass Wu/phoenix hybrid.

                        The team is intact
                        Chip firmly planted on shoulders
Lessons from FHCGM still benefit returners
New addition Shocks are wound for sound

                        We WILL exceed expectations
We WILL battle for the AAC title
                        We WILL dance this season
We WILL Shock the world and smash brackets

Tip the ball, lets do this Shox!!!!!!

As far as college basketball goes, you can't have the same March Madness without the smaller conference teams in there. The first round wouldn't be the same when the overrated Big 12's teams are all losing to power conference bottom feeders instead of small conference champions. That doesn't mean that the power 5 won't do it though, and that it won't still wildly popular and entertaining. But the first round won't get the widespread attention from the most casual fan that doesn't care about the sport December - February.

I don't think there will be any punishment doled out to KU or Arizona. And the reason will be that to keep everyone together, the NCAA will allow paying players in some regard. It's going to become the norm. I get that these are college kids and etc, etc. But fewer and fewer people are giving a crap about that stuff. It's all about the basketball and money. We want to watch them play basketball. We want to watch the players that represent Wichita State play basketball and more importantly, we want to watch them win. Period. The larger schools want the same thing, and they don't give a damn about whether or not they graduate. And while that goes against pretty much everything that college athletics used to stand for, it is the end result of decades of increasing revenue, popularity, and the changing demands of the consumer. Because this has now become a consumer product.

i think that you're really close. the tv networks told the big 12 that they wouldn't be expanding (each school gets $25mil and the networks were not going to pony up another $50mil). once that deal is close to over i believe that we'll see one more big shift in alignment. surely texas and oklahoma will work out a deal with the pac-12 or sec.. ku and k-state don't have the academics to get into the pac-12 or big 10.. maybe acc... maybe mountain west or heaven for bid the aac.

                            stay relevant shox.

My argument against paying players has always been it shouldn't be necessary. If you want to be paid, stay in AAU and take shoe company money, go to the G-League or NBA (if they change 1 and done) or go to Europe. NCAA offers a free ride, games/tournaments all over the globe and media exposure. If you don't want what the NCAA offers, go elsewhere. I fail to see why that's a problem. The FVV and Ron Bakers of the world will still choose college, because they need that exposure to get them paid. The one and dones can take that shoe money in AAU, G-League or Europe.
