On whether he took anything illegal to go to Wichita: “They didn’t do anything under the table with me. I think what happened was there was a three-year period where Kansas lost recruits to Wichita and they got upset and went to the NCAA. I met with representatives from the NCAA and they found nothing. Wichita offered me a chance to play ball and that is what I did.’’
Cliff you must hang around Shockernet more than I ever knew! So many years later and still likes to needle the “flagship” freaking awesome!
If you're not going to go all the way, why go?

But...did Gene Smithson pay for his underaged girlfriend to get an illegal abortion? That’s what SI said in 1982.

I have no idea. None of my business. However...if it happened...it sure wasn't an enticement under the table thing to convince Cliff to sign to play at Wichita St. as Cliff was already on the roster since '79.

In my opinion...there's a whole lot of difference in "buying" a player out of high school than assisting them once on campus. Just like our boy FVV. We didn't buy him outta high school. Looking back...KU should have. Dolp! :)

I don’t think that actually happened (although I too have no idea). The story ran in SI, but it wasn’t in the NCAA findings.

For clarification, the original article stated it was a players girlfriend, not HCGS.

Wichita State, under NCAA investigation for a series of alleged violations, Wednesday awaited word on a ruling by college basketball's governing body....

Think about it for second... If there was substantial evidence of Smithson doing such a thing do you, or anyone, think he would have been kept at the University long enough to recruit 2 first team high school AA's, along in the same class with one who wasn't (X), 2 years later? Or any University in the United States?

Version of events leading up to the SI article which I heard through the grapevine at the time...local doctor used to hang out with the team during Miller's tenure, Smithson asked the doctor to stay away from the team, then the now angry doctor ran to the KC Star with a lurid insider story about the dirty program at WSU, and once the Star got the story, the story had a life of its own.

Wow, history almost went from "WSU official was accused of paying for a player's girlfriend's abortion" to ... "Gene Smithson paid for his underage girlfriend's abortion".

While we're at it, did they ever figure out if Lew Perkins was BTK?
