Ok, how about:
25 cent per gallon gas at the Derby station at Central and Pershing?
The banjo player at Shakeys at 13th and Oliver?
Steffens milk delivered to your porch in a big cardboard box with a tap on it.
Sledding the 17th hole “hill” at McDonald golf course

My only general comment – great offseason thread, or greatEST offseason thread?
My addition is as follows, and in my 2nd decade on ShockerNet I try to mention it at least once per decade. If you were there PLEASE augment my recollection with your own, for reasons that will become apparent later.
1986/1987 Season – I think it was the Cessna Classic back then. Eddie Fogler’s first season, and he was probably eager to win it.
Championship game against Fordham. Classic Levitt Arena 10,666 attendance going crazy.
Loud. Not 54-49 over KU loud, but classic Roundhouse ringin-ears loud.
Fordham trailed in regulation but comes back to send it into overtime. Then a missed Shocks free throw and a last second 3 pointer from Fordham sends it to double overtime.
Fordham builds a big lead in double overtime with time running out when their players decide to emulate a recent addition to the sporting world.
In what I assume was a tribute to Bill Parcells and the New York Giants who had recently invented the behavior…
They picked up the Gatorade bucket and dumped it on their coach. During a game, while time remains, in an arena. All over the floor. All over everything.
The Shocks hit a 3 right when they did it, and after making the 2 free throws on the technical foul the Shocks have possession with a chance to win (or tie, I don’t remember which is why I am asking for additional commentary).
After the inbounds, Gus Santos lets it fly before the horn sounds… nothing but net.
Except the refs called it otherwise and the entire Roundhouse went bat**** crazy. Fogler was going crazy. And although I said it wasn’t 54-49 KU loud, that was probably the angriest I ever personally witnessed the Roundhouse in the many games I attended.
According to an article I found, Fogler tried to invoke a Valley rule that allowed for replay review but the Fordham AD came out of the stands and said it wasn’t a Valley game and told the coach to pull his players off the court and not come out unless they were awarded a championship trophy.
Footnote as to why I remember so vividly:
I was the ballboy under the basket at the end with the Fordham bench. I will never forget my attention being drawn to their bench – while play was going on – and thinking “what the %^&* are those guys doing carrying the Gatorade bucket toward their coach?” while the entire arena was watching the game.
Then I had to clean up the ice and water.
And then I watched from less than 25 feet away, sitting on the basket base, as Gus’ shot left his hand before the buzzer. My hand to God on my deathbed… it was before the horn.
No doubt.
I have no clue who the refs were but my memory always tells me it was Ron Zetcher – he always seemed like he hated us.
Not my best memory, but a noteworthy one. I would love to hear other perspectives from people who were there.

Saw this article today: BOZICH | Local basketball stars react to 'The Last Dance,' Michael Jordan
here is part of the story “It happened April 11, 1981, in Wichita, Kansas, at the fourth annual McDonald’s All-American game.
Maybe Jordan was annoyed that he was not named to the first team in the annual Courier-Journal Super Five ranking of high school prospects. At the time, the CJ’s rankings had as much clout as any national rankings.
Jordan was indeed identified at “Mike” Jordan on the CJ’s second team.
Jordan was bumped off the first team by Patrick Ewing (Georgetown); Manuel Forrest (Louisville); Anthony Jones (Georgetown); Aubrey Sherrod (Wichita State) and Greg Dreiling (Wichita State).”

Well, Sherrod was the co-MVP of the game (West squad). Plus, this article stated Jordan wasn't the MVP, but I recall he was MVP of the East squad.
I was a bit of a basketball fanatic at the time and remember asking others, who were at the game, who is that Jordan kid? He's pretty ******* good.
A lot of people felt that way because going into the season the "experts" (Street and Smiths, et. al.) had no Michael Jordan on any of their lists. Proud to say I attended the game. Manuel Forrest was a bit of a disappointment I might add. As far as "big" guards go Jordan was FAR superior.Last edited by ShockingButTrue; April 21, 2020, 01:50 PM.
