There was the" Wichita "21st Street" Riot of April 1980"

A serious racial riot in northeast Wichita near 21st and Grove. https://www.kwch.com/content/news/Wichitans-reflect-on-1980-riots-in-response-to-incident-of-police-brutality-570941311.html

I use to drive that way all the time.

I remember during the days of A. Carr and Ricky Ross, at 21at. and Hillside was a High School all star game of Illinois verses the stars in Kansas. If I recall, Isaiah Thomas, Mark Aguire, etc.? I did not attend but think both teams scored over 100 points and I think Illinois barely won but A. Carr and Ricky Ross put on quite a show. Is there anybody that was there that could share what they remember that night?
Shocker basketball will forever be my favorite team in all of sports.

I was there. Ricky scored 42 points and was easily the best player on the floor that night.

I don't know if it was as clear as you say. I think Ricky Ross scored 42 points that night and AC had 25 points and 18 rebounds. Different strokes for two different kinds of players.

Isaiah Thomas (Indiana) and Mark Aguirre (DePaul) and a big Center who I think went to DePaul too were on the Illinois team.

You might be thinking of Russell Cross. Mark Aguirre didn't play. Terry Cummings and Darrell "Sky" Walker did though. I get it. You have to know I was squarely on the bench for every game Ricky played at South. My favorite memory was when he broke Darnell Vallentine's City-League game scoring record when he outscored Southeast by himself 46-45. I am just a little biased, so in my world he was by far the best player on the floor that night. I remember the Chicago players talking about Ricky more than Antoine in the post-game presser.

Don't remember the riots. But I was riding the MTA to all parts of the city as a young teenager. As far as off topic "remember when"....

                Ardan anyone? McClouds?

                DISCOUNT STORES OF THE '60S

The Sears store on Lincoln and Grove and their Christmas display. Aluminum Christmas tree with rotating light wheel.

Toys By Roy and LeMans across the way in Towne East.

The "old" Towne East with the the center stage. Won an arcade video game challenge as a 12 year old and won $100 to blow at LeMans. Watched my brother in a break dancing competition on the same stage. Musicland. Waldenbooks. 25 cent comic books. Playing Asteroids for hours on a single quarter.

Farrels candy and ice cream shop in the mall with the huge wooden doors.
                Fanta Sea. Girls.

Girls at Hot Dog on a Stick anyone? Though I preferred the Cheese Sticks over corn dogs..

Nah, there are a bunch. But its still gives some on here 5-10 minutes to forget about everything going on in the world. And since Wethe Haarms thread isn't being rekindled on the recruiting forum, this is the next best thing. LOL.

Here's another Shocker related one from not too long ago...

We spent a season watching the SHockers play in the Kansas Coliseum while the Koch arena was being finished. On my birthday of the year it was to open, on a hot August day, I got a call asking if I wanted to see the arena MONTHS before it would be open to the public on a private tour. At this point nothing had been seen on the arena in public. So of course, I took a camera on on a hot day in August and took dozens of pictures. I uploaded between 25-100 pictures on Shockernet for all the fans to see what we were getting. One of my best friends was kinda pissed he couldn't go with me, but it was last minute.

And playing countless pickup games with Shockers at Heskett Center. I still remember my first game ever. Guarding Jason Perez (his senior year) - he tried to dribble drive from left side of the court and do a reverse layup underneath the goal and I swatted that ball into the nets. I couldn't wait to get home and call my friends to tell them. Yeah, he could should the ball pretty damn well so I don't remember our team winning a lot of games. How about playing one on one with Gus Santos at Heskett. Or missing by about 5 minutes an opportunity to play a game of 1on1 with X-Man in my own flipping driveway.

Weird. Not like us to get off topic here on SN.

Remember when Jason Perez dove into the stands to save a ball, ran back onto the court and made an and-one?

Am I dreaming this up, but didn't we have a couple of years where halftime entertainment included free throw contests with square basketballs?

In the early 90's didn't L.D. Swanson win 2 games in the span of a week or two with buzzer beaters from 25+ feet?

Also, anyone else have their original L.D. Swanson mask that they gave out his sr year? Or their Cheese on a Stick?
