Mid Major = Discrimination. Tell Butler, VCU and Wichita State that they aren't worthy of playing in a BCS conference. I think the results from last season prove it. Being a BCS basketball team somehow makes you better, more qualified and deserving for an at large bid? Not in my opinion.

I think we as shocker fans have to be a little careful about raising hell about the system when we are good (usually 2 or 3 years at a time before our coach moves on ). To be successful in our goal to move into a Gonzaga type position in basketball we need to win our conference more than once a decade or two. Obviously this is hard to do because
having to start over with a new hire every 5 years you have to do an unbelievable job in the hiring process to maintain success. Mid-majors have it tough, no doubt, they basically have to win their reg. season or the tourney or both. The easiest way in my eyes is to hire a Altman,Few,Turgeon,Marshall type, garner phenomenal financial support from the fans
and pay like a bcs school for your coach. If the money is the same a lot of guys will just stay in Wichita, not all but a lot. This would give us continuity and maintain momentum when
a marshall gets things going. We can ***** about it, or open our wallets and change the cycle. WHO"S WITH ME.

We already pay Marshall BCS money. Dude makes a million bucks a year. I'm not saying he's over paid, but he is at or near the top of "mid-major" coaches in pay and is paid more than some BCS coaches. IMO, Turgeon knew after the Sweet 16 season that his time here was limited, and our recruiting dropped. Marshall arrived here with cupboards bare. His recruiting lately seems to indicate that either he intends to stay here for the long haul, or he won't leave our next coach high and dry. Either way, I believe the groundwork has been laid for our program to prosper for years to come.

He doesn't want to rebuild another program. If a Texas A&M type job opens because the guy did well and moved up and is returning a Top 10 team, I might get a LITTLE concerned.

But I don't see Coach Marshall leaving Wichita State except to retire and spend more time with his wife and kids. Remember, while South Carolina is home to him, Wichita is now home to his kids as they have been here 5 years now.

I'd like to think it's true, but that arguement was used as to why MT wouldn't leave and he was here 7 years. Of course, we are talking about 2 different men. I do like the first part of your post.

Please understand, I'm not disagreeing with this. Just sayin' the money, the fans and support, the Chuck (and IBA), the success at recruiting, and success on the court at WSU makes the other possible. I do believe Marshall is much more like Mark Few than Mark Turgeon.

Actually, in 2000 I visited a friend who is a professor at Texas A&M. While my friend was gone doing some work, I talked with another professor who said, with respect to federal grants, that "Faculty at the good schools deserve these grants (independent of merit) because they are at these big schools."

I think many of is knew Mark would leave when he got a good offer and he did. 3G has had money thrown at him and he's stayed put. I'm not saying there aren't a few options out there that would be hard to turn down, but unlike Mark, I don't think 3G is looking for that.

His son starts HS next year and his daughter will be in 7th. He's not going to move them for just anything. I look forward to how far he'll take us the next few years!

aTm is sporting a 207 RPI right now. For comparison that's within 8 points of Bradley (199) and Illinois State (215). I thought moving to Maryland was a head-scratcher. Now the move starts making more sense. If Turgeon ever leaves Maryland, sell the farm and bet against Maryland the next year.

The next step from wsu is probably to a mid-level bcs school, or a going back home scenario. I advocate looking at what that level of school pays its best coaches and pay Greg
that. Then when they come calling, the money doesn't lure him, and he has the security of knowing that what he has built here is much more solid than what he may face elsewhere.
I don't get sucked into the family reasons, Hell Charlie weis is leaving his wife and mentally challenged young daughter half way across the country to coach one of the worst
football programs in history.

If we were able to up the salary by just 10-20%, then many mid-level BCS schools would merely be a lateral move financially.

I agree--there's a few reasons why a coach would decide to move on from WSU, and we should make sure that money isn't one of them.
