  • February 28, 2015 - #10 Northern Iowa at #11 Wichita State

In front of a raucous 10,506, the Wichita State men's basketball team defeated UNI, 74-60, to claim the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season championship Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena. UNI wouldn't fold however and mid-way through the second half, connected on four-straight three-pointers to pull within four, 53-49. Wichita State answered with three's of its own, including two big ones from Wessel to go back up double digits, 66-56, with 4:28 remaining in the game. A Carter layup 20 seconds later off a VanVleet no-look pass put the Shocker lead at 68-56 and force a UNI timeout.

The Shockers cruised the rest of the way to win 74-60 and cement their second-straight MVC regular-season championship.

NOTE: I could not find the full game, so if any knows where it might be let me know.

The Shockers would come up short in the semifinals of the always tough MVC Tourney and would have to wait until Selection Sunday to see where they might be going. They would be 28 and 4 but would the “Committee” reward or look-down upon the Shockers?

2015 Wichita State Men's Basketball Intro Video

No. 10 Wichita State extended the nation's fourth-longest active streak in the Associated Press poll and will open with a Top-10 ranking for the first time in 34 years. In addition, Wichita State is a near unanimous favorite to win its third-straight Missouri Valley Conference title. The Valley released its annual preseason poll and all-conference voting tallies Tuesday morning in advance of MVC Media Day. The Shockers were picked first on 42 of the 43 ballots cast by the league's coaches, media and sports information directors. Ron Baker and Fred VanVleet were named to the preseason All-Valley team, and VanVleet was selected preseason Player of the Year.

              • November 13, 2015 - Charleston Southern at #10 Wichita State

For the 14th consecutive year, Wichita State begins with a season-opening win after dispatching of Charleston Southern, 88-63, Friday night at Charles Koch Arena behind five Shockers in double-figures. The win also extended Wichita State's school-record home court winning streak to 33 games. The first game of the season also had its flaws, as the two teams struggled adjusting to the new rules. Both teams combined to commit 66 fouls in the game and neither squad could really find a rhythm.

                • November 26-29, 2015 - ADVOCARE INVITATIONAL
The #20 AP (we had lost to Tulsa the week before and dropped 11 spots) Shockers would lose all three games in Florida (USC, Alabama, & Iowa), and starters Fred VanVleet (hamstring) and Anton Grady (spinal concussion) and key reserve Landry Shamet (stress fracture) all sat out games with injuries. In addition, potential difference-marker, Kansas transfer Conner Frankamp, was not eligible to compete until the end of the semester.

Wichita State sent its five seniors out on a strong note, rolling to an impressive 74-58 Senior Day win over Illinois State, Saturday afternoon at Charles Koch Arena.

Each of the top three scorers for WSU (23-7, 16-2 MVC) were seniors. Fred VanVleet and Anton Grady scored 16 each, and RonIllinois Baker chipped in 10 points. VanVleet (6-of-10 from the field, 3-of-6 from deep) posted nine assists to moved into the top-5 on the Missouri Valley Conference's all-time list. He also set a new modern conference record by participating in his 63rd MVC victory. Grady hit 6-of-9 attempts from the field and grabbed five rebounds. In a fitting farewell game of his own, glue guy Evan Wessel cleared a team-high eight rebounds (four on the offensive end), three steals and two assist, while also taking a charge.

Marshall played his five seniors together for two minutes before subbing them out one-by-one over the final minute and change. Grady took a seat at 1:19, Wessel went to the bench at :49. VanVleet, Baker and Wamukota made staggered exits with :23 to go.

In a postgame ceremony, WSU honored the five seniors, accepted the 2016 MVC championship trophy and cut down the nets. The Shockers are just the second Valley team in 46 years to win a regular season title in three-consecutive years, joining Southern Illinois (four-straight from 2002-05).
