6 games for the sucker puncher. LOL! And three of those games are against Wright St., Radford and Arkansas Pine Bluff. This balancing act of hitting him hard with games but not enough games to hurt their own interest in the Big East is laughable.

Hey don't forget Chicago State in that mix. This why I suggested both teams be banned from post-season play which could carry a significant financial hit for both their teams and their leagues. The games they are missing just did not seem all that relevant or important. The one league game Gates will miss for Cincy, against Pitt, they probably lose anyways.

Xavier loses to ORU by 22 on their home floor without 3 suspended starters. I believe we could sit three of our players and still hold our own on our home floor.
Where oh where is our T. Boone Pickens.

Sad thing is the selection committee will probably disregard this loss when seeding them.

I still think there should be more penalties for this. I am surprised the ncaa has done nothing.

I guess they only get involved if someone makes a technical mistake on a transcript.

They certainly don't want to overstep their authority to make sure someone who belongs in jail gets a proper punishment. I guess protecting the integrity of the game isn't in their jurisdiction.

I've struggled with this for a week now. Trying to balance "right" with "fair", "team" with "individual" and "caught up in a moment" vs "long term consequences".

But your comment "I guess they only get involved if someone makes a technical mistake on a transcript" just hit me like a ton of bricks.

First, it makes you wonder if they step in against someone not in their circle of friends, but let's leave the conspiracy theory aside for a moment. The NCAA punishes THE SCHOOL for a clerical mistake. Someone else mentioned that if this occurred on the street there would be criminal charges filed. The silence from the NCAA on this is deafening.

It is more important to get your paperwork correct than it is to punish a person, coach or school for a complete lack of control in allowing a violent act to occur and frankly to continue.

And if you were anywhere near this (ie fans, COACHES, administrators of Xavier and Cincy leading up to this game) and didn't see something like this coming, then you had blinders on or condoned it.

              The penalties were a joke.

At first I thought '72 was being too reactionary and over-reaching with his post season ban. I now believe he was right all along. This remains unfinished business in my book.

@Downtown Shocker Brown:, I concur. As painful as it would be, I too would pull my support if WSU's response was this cowardly.

Trash-talking is prohibited in the rule book, yet officials have done little to curb it. Remember Blair's technical in the NIT last year, in a game that actually mattered? Yet the X-Cincy refs did nothing, even after being asked by one of the head coaches to do something about it. They should shoulder some of the blame.

In a fair world the NCAA would also punish itself for not mandating enforcement of their own rules.

Maybe if players and coaches understood the consequences of bringing their "gangsta" tendencies on the court, they would have fewer "gangstas" in the locker-room. College should make men, not punks, of boys.

They wanted to deal with it immediately and made a mistake (or they wanted to put it behind them and didn't care abouit the penalties). Gates should have received an indefinite suspension immediately and then they could have waited to give him his penalty. His sucker punch was so flagrant that he shouldn't play for a long time.

I thought the coach should bring out some fifties era unis, give everyone the same military haircut, shave, and makeup over all visible tats for the season. Interesting who would play under these conditions.

What happened here appears to me to be similar to, I don't know, every single hockey play that ends up with a dead puck in the same zip code as the goalie. Why the double standard?

At the risk of sounding stupid, I offer up the Molina incident where the Valley suspended the player and coach for the remainder of the season. I know it happened in April, and I would assume it would have been for 20+ games and the entire postseason in '99, and WSU was a serious contender for the National Title in '99, much more so than either Cincy or Xavier are.

While the outcome was much worse, one could argue the intent was the same, or perhaps even worse in the basketball game. And still the punishment probably wasn't enough.
