ESPN ranking Mid Major Programs (WSU #3)

ICThawk, sorry to break this to you, but your football team wouldn't have fared any better in the Big East. Sure, maybe you could have won a couple conference games, but with Turner Gill as the coach, there was nowhere to go but up. Here's hoping this new AD will get it right this time. I personally have nothing against any sport at KU, except for mens basketball. The arrogance of KU basketball fans killed it for me, not to mention the fact that they choked against UTEP, Bucknell, Bradley, Northern Iowa, Arizona, Syracuse, Maryland,, the list goes on. I also have a deep hatred for Bill Selfish. The guy is an egotistical jerk who I had the unfortunate pleasure of meeting and almost slapped him. But that's just basketball, I can tolerate KU in all other sports, although I'm much more of a K-State fan. But the Shox are my #1 no matter what.


Oh and to answer your question, I would love to see Wichita State in a better conference, but we all know it isn't happening until we get a football team again. And we all know the chances of that are slim and none, and slim just left the building.

Editor's note: Please keep in mind that we do not consider the Atlantic 10, Mountain West and Conference USA to be mid-major conferences, thus they are not included in this report.

This isn't just one writer's perception at ESPN and is why it is so improtant for MVC schools, from top to bottom, to schedule and perform better. These reminders by sports media, especially ESPN, can be damaging to future recruiting. This perception by ESPN and the MWC is another reason why the "challenge" won't probably continue after another year.

Why all of a sudden are they not a mid major when, except for the last few years, the Valley has been better then most if not all of those leagues for many many years. I see us as equals or maybe even a little better overall. The Valley has a few down years and now were a mid major? Is it becuase we are not a good football league, or lack thereof.

I don't thinks its football. The A10 doesn't have football schools (except Temple). The national talking heads now have this new term called a "quasi-major" which is composed of the A10, CUSA, and MWC. Those three now somehow outrank the rest of us.

I think we need to keep our eyes on the WCC. With St. Mary's, Gonazaga, and now BYU to add credibility, they may move right into that quasi-major classification. Now is the time to get out of the MVC. We really need to find someway into one of these quasi majors, or we're going to get squeezed out. I suspect one of the casualities of conference realignment is that the "mid majors" are going to get shoved out of the NCAA b-ball tournament. Sounds crazy,,, there will be national outrage when it happens, but then we'll all just have to get over it. We need to be proactive on this.

Those 3 conferences aren't considered mid-major because of the red line rule. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It's all about perception. I haven't committed myself fully to supporting a move to C-USA, if it happens, but it should be discussed. We can't control what others think about the Valley, but we can control to some degree whether we can raise our profile by moving to a higher regarded conference.
