Interestingly, San Diego State knocked off Cal today.

Our RPI jumped from 68 to 40 after tonight's win per WarrenNolan.com. UNLV fell from 12 to 24.

The MVC currently has 5 teams in the top 50, followed by Drake at 101, then BU at 210, and UE, SIU and ISU red all sub-250. Pretty massive spread.

That's good to hear, but it means nothing unless we follow through. Let's hope tonight proves to be the point when the light came on for this team. If we can sustain this kind of play throughout the year we should be in good shape. We will not shoot this well in most, if not all, of our remaining games but we may not need to if we play as solid as we did tonight in all phases of the game.

original post updated. When I post the results I may try the format I used above. Is that easier for everyone to read after the games are played? I think I will still list the future games the same way I have been. Then just convert it when I update the results. What does everyone think?

I know it is still a little early (but the non-con schedule is about half over). If the Valley could finish with 5 top 50 teams that would pretty much guarantee at least 2 at large bids.

The key for us is to not lose to any of those sub 250 teams. Beating top 50 teams really pads your resume. We have had a big problem the last few years in not having very many top 50 rpi wins.

We may get the chance this year (like we did in 2006) to get several top 50 wins in MVC play.

If I posted this on MVCFans, I'd get blistered, but I honestly don't see how ISU Blue's RPI is higher than the Shockers??? I now the RPI is all stats with no personal bias, but how can ISU's losses to to Minnesota and Boise not hurt as much as Wichita State's losses to Alabama and Temple? Conversely, how can Wichita State's win vs. UNLV not trump any wins the Sycamores have.

I know, figures don't lie, but we all know who uses figures.
There are three rules that I live by: never get less than twelve hours sleep; never play cards with a guy who has the same first name as a city; and never get involved with a woman with a tattoo of a dagger on her body. Now you stick to that, and everything else is cream cheese.

Who you lose to doesn't matter in the RPI. The basic formula is this:

                Your Winning Percentage (25%)
                Opponent Winning Percentage (50%)
                Opponent's Opponent Winning Percentage (25%)

Since it is just the raw winning percentages, it doesn't matter which teams games you lose, just the final totals. RPI is essentially a reflection of strength of schedule, less than a full-fledged statistical model for team rankings.

I know. What I was trying to say, and forgive me for dong a poor job expressing myself, is that it surprises me that using a system that is unbiased and is completely devoid of human opinion, which is primarily based on rating teams on their win-loss record in conjunction with evaluating the quality of the opponent, that Indiana State would show up ahead of Wichita State. Prior to the start of the season, I picked WSU first in the league. And while both Wichita State and Indiana State have lost two games, Wichita State has faced tougher competition and had a win against a better team than I believe is even listed on the Sycamore schedule. When teams have identical W-L records, I hopefully when things shake out, the team that played the tougher schedule would have the higher RPI. That is why I mentioned that figures don't lie, but liars use figures. It seems to me that Indiana State squeaked ahead of WSU, not based on the wins and quality of opponents, but the quality of the opponent's opponents.

Sorry about the two rambling and confusing posts, but my Sunday started at 6:15 AM, included church, visiting the elderly after church, then two youth basketball games, followed by attending the Creighton basketball game and capped off with a Christmas party. And while I didn't drink at the Christmas party, it was a very long day and I pretty much brain dead and bungled what I was attempting to convey. It's 3:00 AM and I'm not done with what I have to have done for a 9:00 AM meeting. I better get off of these stupid internet boards right now.
