A great reference guide to answer your inquiries about shocker basketball history is the annual media guide. I believe you can purchase one of these at the ticket office. It has all the answers dating back even a lot more than some of the old coggers can remember. It's an interesting read also....

Back in the Cohen era, KU did not mind playing us because we would give them a 3 for 1 home advantage to play them. If I recall, we played them twice at Lawrence, once in KC, and then they came here once. Therefore, our winning percentage is bad with KU, but how many times did we actually get them to Wichita to play? To that I say bring it---but it will be 1 for 1 or nothing if I had my way.

Where WSU did shine through the years was versus Big 10 teams. Our overall record against them is impressive throughout Shocker history but I have no data. When ESPN-etc. and big money TV coverage came into to play, it helped Conferences such as the Big 10 and the Big East to flourish.

Also, you can find the all-time records in the programs that they sell at the games for $3. They might not be as accurate as the media guide, but its cheaper. I bought a program at the LSU game this year. It has us never playing Seton Hall and App State, but then lists us as 0-1 against App State right above it. Those were the only mistakes that stood out.

Please keep in mind that the all time records are skewed by the fact that KU and K-State will only agree to play us when their programs are "up" and ours is down. Case in point: the Ted Owens years were not a time when KU would have scheduled us. It took an NCAA pairing in the tourney to force them to play us. Result: A sweet victory.

Also, when you have to play a 3 and 1 at home arrangement, there is no way that you can hope to have a favorable record. Just look at our record against teams that we have had these types of arrangements with. When you buy games with no return visit, the buyer should win most of those games. Those factors skew the numbers.

Bottom line is, whatever KU and K-State attribute it to, they don't want us on the schedule every year on a even basis.

True, you have to account for the "chicken factor". There was a gap of 36 years between the time WSU played KU in 1981's NCAA Tournament and the last time they played prior to that matchup forced by the NCAA Tournament.

Um, several of the more recent KSU/WSU games were during down KSU years. One was in Jack Hartman's last year when he had a barely .500 team and others in the Tan Tom and Wooly eras.

Just a small tidbit. At Charles Koch Arena, according to the 2007-08 Shocker Basketball guide. We are 1-3 versus KU and 7-4 versus K-State.

I don't think that is true.

It was 4 to 6 game deal that had equal games in Wichita and Lawrence.

Obviously, someone can confirm.

My recollection is a 1-1-1 with Wichita, Lawrence, KC.

1985-86 in Kemper (as part of a 4-team tourney. WSU and KU both won)
1986-87 in Wichita
1987-88 no game
1988-89 in Lawrence
1989-90 in Wichita
1990-91 in Lawrence
1991-92 in Wichita
1992-93 in Lawrence

So it appears to me the contract b/t KU and WSU was:

1 game in KC (there was an additional game b/c of tourney)

4 games in Lawrence

3 games in Wichita

If I recall, the non-tourney game in Kemper in the 84-85 season was a true neutral site game. It seems to me both schools had equal # of tickets. I attended the game and the crowd noise was close.

This is simliar to the last contract b/t WSU and KSU which was a 3-2 deal.

The 83-84 game in Lawrence was a Sunday afternoon game on national TV. KU games were not that well attended in those days. We had a very large pep band and a few thousand fans in attendance. It was not sold out. Unfortuantely X didn't get a lot of help and we lost.

All you need to know about those series is that there were no regular-season meetings in the early 1960s and early 1980s.
